How We Met
So we actually met on my birthday (September 28) back in 2014 when I was studying abroad in London. My friend met his best friend, Alex in a bar and wanted to go to this “party” at his friend’s house that night, so my best friend Madeleine and I went with her and I saw Julien by the window and it literally was like the movies! Love at first sight. We stayed up ALL night talking about what we love to do, what he does, what I do, what food we like (we’re both MAJOR foodies) and it’s perfect because I love to cook and he’s a chef, and I’m in fashion and he loves clothes haha.
We went on our first date the next day to Sushi Samba–the coolest sushi place in London because it’s on the 40-something floor of the Heron Tower (look it up, it’s worth a visit!). He did so well! So in December 2014, I returned to Boston to finish the year and a half of school that I had left and we did long distance. It was the hardest thing ever! Every time we left each other was heart wrenching but every time we saw each other again it was like no time had passed and now here we are.
how they asked
So, a little bit of a funny backstory, since I’m awful with surprises because I somehow always find something out. We went to spend a weekend at my parent’s lake house the weekend after I graduated college, but he INSISTED that we went on Thursday night, which seemed super weird to me. Plus, we were driving all over from Boston to New York to New Jersey–either coming home from my graduation or going on job interviews for him (he’s a chef in London and is moving here this July). So I was super tired of driving about was like….why can’t we just go Friday morning? It’s the same thing. But he insisted so we went and I thought nothing of it–the whole time I was packing my mom was like you should bring this dress! And I was like Mom….we’re going to the lake…why would I need a white and lacey For Love and Lemons dress of all dresses to tell me to pack? So I didn’t pack ANYTHING nice just relaxed and comfy. Anyway, we get there and I’m super sick Thursday night so Julien made dinner and we went to bed early. But while he was making dinner he was in a panic like oh my god you can’t be sick this is not good–oh my god it’s going to rain tomorrow?! Not good. And the whole time, I knew he had a surprise, but nothing of the engagement caliber! I literally was playing along thinking we were going on a hike, or a kayak ride or a helicopter ride at most. Also, the docks were in a weekend before memorial day so I was also like ???? what are those? Literally so many clues passed me by and I still had no clue. So the next morning I semi wake up around 7:30 and Julien is in a towel from the shower but I was so groggy I just went back to bed.
Then probably an hour later, still no Julien, I woke up to use the bathroom and then I went back to bed, but I checked my phone first and there were like TEN ALARMS set and I was like ok turning all of these off–I knew Julien was the culprit because they were all 9:00 9:02 9:03 9:06 9:10 and so on. Then close to ten someone (Julien) slammed a door right outside our room but disappeared somewhere and I woke up to a note next to my phone and a selfie stick that said “Go make yourself even more beautiful and get dressed. Once you have done this, go into the kitchen and find the next clue by the coffee machine. (at every note you must use the selfie stick)” So I’m all like “…ok then” and I didn’t bother showering because a hike…duh but put on makeup to play along. The next notes were scattered all around the house having me make coffee because I can’t do anything without it, etc. and the second to last clue said to text my mom for the answer and she texted back “turn over the cards, silly!” So I did, and they all spelled out Go to the Pier (I also had to post this on social media, so obviously I chose insta).
I quickly went outside and was still confused but there were arrows leading me down and when I got to the dock, he was standing there alone and the very last card read “empty your hands and come to me, I love you.” and THAT is when I finally clocked on to everything and immediately like the cry baby I am started whimpering “what are you doing out here?” and then he proposed!!
It was so adorable–there were two old men slowly, and I mean slowly, passing by on their little boat about 5 feet from our dock and they witnessed the whole thing–they even clapped for us and our photographer (yes she was hidden the whole time, I also had no idea) said they were crying! So that’s how it went down!
But the best part was that all of my family came up to the lake house to enjoy the weekend celebrating. About two hours later I saw this mysterious black SUV drive up our driveway and I was like hmm maybe they’re here for the people next door and turned into the wrong driveway. But it was his mom! She was here to see me graduate but I thought she had gone back to the UK the day beforehand! THEN as if all of the other surprises weren’t enough, Julien opened the back door and his dad popped out! I was so shocked! Because this whole time I was thrown off thinking he was taking his “financial advisor’s yearly exam.” I had an amazing time celebrating with my new fiancé and our families that weekend–so much fun to see them together (and so relieving to see them getting along!).
