How We Met

Adam’s side: I had never met Sarah prior to high school, but on the first day of freshman year in Mr. Nagel’s Theater Arts class, I fell in love with her at first sight. I began to look forward to the second-period class every day, and would spend my time in class scheming up ways to talk to her. Sarah said that she originally thought I was weird, but that tends to be most people’s first impression of me.

The seating arrangement in the class consisted of couches lining the perimeter of the room, leaving the center open for lecturing and student performances. In this particular class, the students could sit wherever they pleased on any given day, and although Sarah and I started the year sitting on opposite sides of the room, I eventually built up the courage to make my move to the seat next to her.

Over time, we became friends and began to speak to each other on a daily basis both in class and outside of school. Over the span of a year and a half, and each of us going through relationships with other people, our friendship grew to the point that we would confide in each other before anyone else. Sarah began to realize that I wasn’t so weird after all, and in April of 2011, my patience finally payed off.

how they asked

Sarah’s side: Earlier in the year, we planned a quick getaway to Iceland over our Thanksgiving break. We flew in on Thursday morning and were flying out on Sunday morning. We knew we had to take advantage of our short time there, so we spend every waking minute exploring the beautiful country. Every night, we would go somewhere new in order to try and spot the Northern Lights.

Friday night, we decided to go on an adventure to Þingvellir National Park, which was about an hour away from where we were staying. Once we finally get there, Adam decides to turn down a road with a big sign that says “closed” next to it. Obviously, I’m super nervous and saying we shouldn’t go this way because of the huge “closed” sign, but he insists it’s fine. Down the long, snowy road we park, get out, and start walking down a path. It is pitch black out, so we are using our phone flashlight to navigate down this very snowy path and it is extremely windy too. We finally get to a lake, and at the end of the dock there is someone taking pictures. I did not think this was unusual as every night we went out in search of the aurora there were always photographers around. Adam starts chatting with him and he introduces himself as Halldor. Then, Adam asked if he would mind taking a picture of us. I thought this was a little strange, but went with it anyways. He took a picture of us, and Adam asked if he would mind taking just one more. Little did I know Adam orchestrated this whole plan. With the sky full of stars and the aurora above he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! It was absolutely perfect.

These past 7 years have been full of adventures for the two of us, and I am looking forward to many more adventures to come! I am so happy to be marrying my best friend.
