How We Met

John and I met at Carowinds, a theme park in North Carolina! It just so happened that my baby sister’s youth leader was his older brother. The youth group took a trip to Carowinds and my sister called me to be a chaperone and his brother called him. I saw him for the first time and that’s all it took!

How They Asked

We had some friends in town and we had planned to do a Friday night dinner with them and some more of our close friends — nothing out of the ordinary for us. We went to one of our favorite restaurants, Becks in Calabash NC. Earlier in the day, one of my friends (Heather) that were going to dinner with us asked if I could make sure Joshua, my bonus son, was dressed cute because Ally, her daughter/his girlfriend wanted to take pictures on Sunset Beach after dinner. Again, nothing seemed odd to me. We met our friends for dinner and had the best time. After we ate all the seafood we could, we all drove down to Sunset Beach for photos. All of our crew got in their cars and headed that way I remember thinking it was different that we were all going but I also thought no one would want to pass up the sunset. We use to live on the island and when we were driving over the bridge I remember feeling a little sad that we no longer lived here. We got to the very end of the beach and walked down towards the water.

Heather had her professional camera and I had my phone and we started taking pictures of the kids. We made them laugh and told them how to pose for a good 30 minutes. I remember thinking, Joshua sure does like this girl to do all of this! I took a step back to admire the sunset and then walked over to John, my boyfriend at the time like I’ve done a million times before, and got on my tip-toes for a kiss. He kissed me and then said, “well since we are here I thought I would ask you a question.” Now we are scheduled to travel to Hawaii in August and he had said he wanted to propose there so none of this was on my mind. But when he said that one little sentence I couldn’t believe it!

At first, I thought he was kidding but then I saw him look at me and I knew. He told me, “this is the first place I ever kissed you and the first place I bought you a home and now I want it to be the place I ask you to be my wife.” I cried and cried and cried so more. I was in such disbelief. I didn’t have him proposing on my mind at all! He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. The ring was actually a surprise so I had no clue what it looked like. But as soon as he opened that beautiful blue box I’m a little embarrassed to say I shouted, “holy shit John!!” I kneeled down with him, grabbed him, and kissed him. He asked if that was a yes but all I could do was shake my head and cry. Our closest friends got to witness it all and my dearest friend Heather captured it all for us. He did so good. He had it all planned out even to telling our friends who own the restaurant what was going on. He was so calm and peaceful. It was the easiest yes I’ve ever said.
