How We Met
We were both students of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2021 (At Virginia Tech – Go Hokies!). We honestly had no idea who each other were for the first year but quickly became friends over the summer and into the beginning of our second year. Going through a rough year with a tough curriculum, roommate and friend troubles, he quickly became one of my closest friends and someone I could confide in and cry on their shoulder. I felt the urge to keep it in the friendzone, after walking around campus and finding ourselves eating pizza at the Duck Pond for three hours, we both knew there was something there. Our first date was a hike to McAfee’s Knob for a sunset view, an 8-mile hike up a mountain to the most photographed spot on the Appalachian Trail. Our relationship took off and the rest is history!
How They Asked
We made a commitment to go hiking every weekend of our last semester of veterinary school. For the Easter Holiday, he suggested we go on a backpacking trip to McAfee’s Knob, where our first date was. We joked for months we wouldn’t get engaged for a few more years due to our long-distance for next year (I’ll be in Seattle, Washington and he will be in Raleigh, NC) and our lack of income for the past few years (#vetschoollife), so I was oblivious.
I loved the idea and we packed everything and begun a hike up the mountain. I mentally noted that he was being oddly excited and positive despite the touch climb, bugs, and weather conditions expected for the evening. We met a good friend at the campsite and we decided to head to the top for a sunset watch from McAfee’s Knob like our first date.
When we got there we had the entire place to ourselves – an incredibly rare feat at this spot! Like everyone who visits the knob, we opted to take some pictures on the knob to document our trip. After standing on the end of the knob, he grabbed my hand and began confessing his love. Of course, I was still oblivious and confused but begun to cry when he got down on one knee. I had no idea it was coming and it was a perfect surprise!
