Sara and Andrew
How We Met
Andrew and I met through a mutual friend our senior year of high school in 2009. We went to different schools and his friend had Andrew help him ask me to prom. We went to prom in the same group and spent the whole night talking to each other. We began dating later that summer and then our relationship became a long distance one when we went away to college. I stayed in California while he went to Michigan and we spent the next four years flying back and forth to visit each other. He moved back to the Bay Area for grad school and we moved in together in August 2015 after 6 years of dating.
how they asked
Andrew and I had planned to go to my grandparent’s house in Sebastopol, CA for a weekend. We liked to go up there to relax and visit with them. They live near wine country and the views from their deck are so pretty. We arrived that morning and spent the day with them, going into town and hanging around the house. Andrew and I went to dinner at our favorite restaurant by ourselves after my grandparent’s said they already had plans for the evening. I noticed Andrew was on his phone a lot at dinner but he said he was just texting with a friend who needed him to answer some questions for him right away and I didn’t think anything of it. After dinner, we drove back to my grandparent’s house. They have a long driveway and as we got closer I could see that the lights on the deck were on and I knew we didn’t leave any on. We parked the car and as I got out and walked up the back steps I could see strands of twinkly lights and dozens of candles. My knees grew wobbly when I saw a small table with a single red rose and a Tiffany’s bag. Andrew led me up the steps and turned me to face him. He told me how much he loved me and how thankful I was for being so patient with him. Then he got down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?” as he opened a small ring box with the most beautiful ring inside.
I was in so much shock I think I said yes and he put it on my finger. We hugged and he whispered “I have another surprise for you” and turned me around. Both of our families came out of the house (where they had been watching the whole proposal). It turns out that while we were at dinner both of our families showed up and helped set the stage for proposal, following Andrew’s very detailed plans. He had been working on the proposal for over a month and was working with everyone to ensure everything was just right. They were texting him for time updates during dinner so they knew when they could start lighting the candles. My sister was also secretly taking photos from behind a door so we captured the whole moment on film. We celebrated that night with everyone and it was the perfect proposal!
