Samantha and Kevin

How We Met

We lived in the same dorm as freshmen, but it wasn’t until the end of our sophomore year in college that Kevin and I met. Our first encounter happened during our freshman year. He was standing in the lobby of our dorm wearing a suit. “You look handsome!” I exclaimed as I walked by with my girlfriends to pick up the Chinese food we had ordered. He says he tried to play it cool, but that I totally caught him off guard. Fast forward to the last week of our sophomore year, and Kevin asked me to lunch despite us never having gotten to know each other. We hit it off from the moment I hopped into his car, and our lunch lasted over three hours! I told Kevin I was leaving in three months to spend the fall semester studying abroad in London, England, and was disheartened to learn that he was planning to do the same program the following spring semester. But that didn’t stop us!

We spent every second we could together during those last three days of our sophomore year. When each of us went home from college, Kevin insisted on coming to my house and meeting my family. He drove from Long Island to upstate New York just to spend a few hours with me. I knew he was special from the moment I met him, but his willingness to go so far out of his way for me and my family completely confirmed my feelings for him. A few weeks later, he asked me to be his girlfriend in Grand Central Station. Another month later, we first said, “I love you.” We fell so deeply for each other during that summer which made saying goodbye for four mouths that much harder. During my semester abroad, we talked on the phone every day and continued to strengthen our relationship. He would spend time with my family nearly every Sunday, and even surprised me in London halfway through the semester! We knew if we could make it through our time apart, then we could make it through anything – and we were right!

Where to Propose in Central Park, New York

how they asked

The proposal was absolutely perfect. Kevin and I were coming up on our three and a half year anniversary when he suggested that we go to New York City. I was just finishing my law school exams and thought it would be a nice way to celebrate the end of one of my most challenging semesters. He had recently bought a new camera and wanted to make a video that documented our day together. I didn’t think it was out of the ordinary because he usually takes videos to document our adventures. We took the train to Grand Central and walked by the bench where Kevin asked me to be his girlfriend three and a half years prior. We then strolled through the Bryant Park Christmas Market, admiring the sights while munching on french fries. From there, we walked to Rockefeller Center to take pictures by the tree. And after that, we went to Central Park where I was hoping to find a bench because my feet were hurting. Despite my struggle, Kevin was determined to find the perfect spot to set up his camera for a “picture” — at least, that’s what he told me.

I sat down on a bench, admiring the beauty and serenity of Central Park as Kevin set up his camera. Little did I know, he was setting it up to record the proposal! Just as I began to pose for the picture, Kevin turned me, got down on one knee, and poured his heart out. He asked me to marry him, and I was so surprised that I could not stop smiling and laughing. After I said yes, we took more pictures with the photographer he had hired and even met up with his parents for a celebratory drink! Kevin then took me to Gabriel Kreuther, an incredible French restaurant where we had our finest dining experience yet. It was the most magical day, and I cannot stop thinking about how blessed I am to be able to spend the rest of my life with the most loving, caring, and thoughtful person I could have ever hoped for.
