How We Met

I knew of Joey because we went to the same high school. We both played soccer and played against eachother before we were dating. I was good friends with one of Joey’s friends at the time so he knew of me as well. As in 2012 fashion, Joey posted a tbh (to be honest) on Facebook which I liked. He posted on my Facebook wall, “Tbh I don’t know you but you seem pretty chill.” He says that I stood out from the rest so he private messaged me saying hello. He told me, “My iPod is hard to type on so you should text me.” So I gave him my number and we text every day. He had a lot of friends that were girls so I wasn’t sure if he liked me or just wanted to be my friend.

We would say hi to each other in the halls and walk around school together after classes. We eventually began to hangout outside of school. We went to the movies, my cousins birthday party, went kayaking and ran a 5k together. I started to get the feeling he might want to be more than just friends. We were on the phone one night and he told me that he liked me. I told him I liked him back and I was so happy that I couldn’t sleep at all that night. We started dating a week after that night. I was a sophomore in high school and Joey was a junior in high school when we started dating on May 31st, 2012.

how they asked

Joey and I had always discussed the idea of getting married after we both graduate college. Since I graduate in May of this year and our 6 year anniversary is in May, I thought he would propose around then. Around Thanksgiving of this year, we started looking for rings. I thought we were just looking for fun and to see what I liked. Little did I know, he bought the ring a week after we went ring shopping. The night of the proposal, I thought we were going to his friends house for a game night with a group of friends. It was snowy out so we were running late and he claimed that some of his friends were already there waiting for us. When we pulled into his friends farm, there were no other cars and there were luminaries on the ground. I was confused and thought they were Christmas decorations.

As we parked the car, strands of lights turned on in the pine trees. I saw pictures of us hung on the trees and it suddenly hit me what was happening. Joey led me into a circle of snow covered pine trees lit up by twinkly lights. He told me that the past 5 years have been amazing and we’ve made so many memories together and it would mean the world if we can continue making memories together. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was sobbing and saying yes, yes, yes! I couldn’t believe that this was really happening. It felt like a dream that the man I love so deeply finally asked me to marry him.

It turned out that there was no game night but one of his friends was hiding in the bushes to get some pictures of the proposal. With the many holiday gatherings, we were able to tell our friends and family the exciting news. I couldn’t have asked for a better man, proposal, or ring. I truly can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
