How They Asked
Jamie and I have been together for 7 years but when we packed our bags to spend Christmas in Holland with his family, in the quaint but enchanting town of Voorburg, it never in a million years crossed my mind that he would pop the question.
On Christmas Eve, we woke up very jet-lagged and I had some work items I needed to finish up before the holiday was upon us. Jamie went out with his mom to help with “errands”, unbeknownst to me, he was actually going with his mom and his extremely talented 18-year-old cousin, Noah Slootweg, to scout out and plan the proposal. When he came back, he casually told me that we were going to see the lights tonight and what time I needed to be ready. As we were getting ready to go, I asked, “why isn’t your family joining?” to which he calmly noted, “it was a light festival they have seen a million times.” We set off to enjoy the night and what it had yet to reveal.
He took me to the gardens where he used to come as a child and also were Hofwijck is located. He walked me around and began to explain to me why Holland was such a special place for him. He continued on, revealing parts to his past that I never heard in such detail. Listening intently, I didn’t even think about what was yet to come.
As he concluded, he pulled me off the path to take a moment to admire Hofwijck, and he summarized his memories he referenced how life comes full circle and I am the end of the circle for him. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Just as he did, Noah, jumped out and captured the moment perfectly! What a perfect Christmas surprise!
Noah then snapped a few extra shots of us in the days following at Hofwijck and around the sweet town of Voorburg. I learned later on that Jamie planned a “work trip” a few weeks prior to the proposal, during this trip, he went to visit my mom and dad and officially asked for my hand in marriage – swoon – what a gentleman! We spent the rest of the holiday in utter delight surround by Jamie’s Dutch family and soaking up every moment together.
