How We Met
Chris is from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and I have lived in the small town of Kincardine, Ontario my whole life. Chris’ family moved here many years ago. We worked at the same grocery store, Sobeys, (he was in the meat department and I was a cashier) for a few years. I had the biggest crush on him, but never had the nerve to speak to him, only admiring from afar. Many years passed, and we went different ways.
Fast forward four years, through university, and I was now working at the local Kincardine Tourist office. Chris had since moved to a town 30 minutes away from where we both used to live. It was the night of my town’s summer car show, and I was working at the tourist booth table set up on the sidewalk. As I helped tourists find information, handing out free frisbees, I looked up for one moment and caught glimpse of the most handsome man with a crazy handlebar moustache. I asked everyone at work if anyone knew who that man was, and as if it was fate, my coworker told me it was Chris French. Wow. Seeing him after all of these years was a surreal feeling. He looked so confident, well-put-together, and handsome. At this time, a customer came to the table, and I was forced out of my fairytale mind, back to work. At the end of the night, Chris and his friends walked by the table again on their way home. I must have been staring, because he too was staring at me. When i realized he was looking at me too, I must have smiled a little brighter, and he quickly turned away.
The next day, sitting at work, he was ALL i could think about. Instinctively, I found his profile on Facebook. Wow, he was handsome. I added him on Facebook, before anyone could talk me out of it. Later that night, he accepted my friend request, and you can almost say the rest is history.
I made quick work to meet with him in person. We met and shared our first date on July 1st, 2015, AKA the day my life changed. I finally had a purpose.
What was meant to be a coffee date, turned into a 4 hour walk, talking, laughing, sharing tea, and staying in town for the Canada Day fireworks. We were inseparable from day 1. I knew from date one, but it was on date 4 that I told my Mom “He is the man I am going to marry”.
This is where the twist in the story begins.
One week before meeting Chris, I had accepted an offer from a University in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, starting in September 2015. I was off to explore the world, and reach my dreams of becoming a primary school teacher.
Chris and I spent everyday of that summer together (before work, after work, days off, you name it). We were so smitten with each other. One week before I was set to leave, Chris took me to our favourite spot on the pier in Kincardine. He presented me with diamond earrings to remember him by in my travels. (It is crazy because at 2 months, I thought it was a ring, and I was prepared to say YES to this man already).
Throughout my year abroad, Chris visited me THREE times. Seriously, how lucky am I ?? We travelled the world together. We lived a real life fairytale, visiting London, Ireland, and touring all of Wales in a car driving on the wrong side of the road. Our favourite spot was Snowdonia National Park, Wales. My departure was a blessing in disguise, because we have SO many unbreakable, surreal, once in a lifetime memories that we will forever share. We danced, twirled, and dipped our way across the UK, loving every second on the world, and of each other.
how they asked
Chris and I both knew since day one that this day would quickly arrive. The love that we share is unbelievable, a fairytale, really. He makes me laugh more than anyone I know. He is goofy, and funny, and the most genuine soul in the world. He would give anything in the world for me, or his family. We are the perfect match for each other. Chris is so patient, kind, and caring. He supported me through my entire journey in reaching my dream to become a teacher (which i am now!!). Without him, I wouldn’t be teaching right now.
The week that I arrived home from the UK was such a rush of emotions. Chris and I moved in together immediately, after spending the year apart. Neither of us couldn’t think of a moment we wouldn’t want to spend with the other right by our side. I was spoiled by friends and family, catching up on all of the moments I had missed.
On the day of our one year anniversary (July 1st, 2016), Chris planned a special evening for the two of us. When we arrived at the restaurant, it was the same venue we had shared our first dinner on our first date. This restaurant is a favourite for us, because it overlooks the lake and lighthouse, and is absolutely stunning at sunset. We shared a great dinner (which i was too nervous to eat). There was a different feeling that day, and I felt something big was happening.
Chris walked me outside after, to find a car show downtown Kincardine!! It was just like the day that we had first seen each other, just over a year before. We walked around, looking at the cars for a few minutes. Chris insisted on going down to our favourite place, the beach.
I was excited to go down to the beach to watch the sunset, my favourite.
We walked on the boardwalk, in and out of sand dunes, kissing and smiling and laughing the whole way.
We finally reached a beautiful gazebo. Infront of it was a perfectly placed piece of driftwood. It was just the two of us, watching the giant waves together. It was perfect.
All of a sudden, I heard a bag piper in the distance (A typical sound in our Scottish town) which I pointed out to Chris. The sound of the beautiful music kept getting closer and closer… Before I knew it, the bagpiper was standing beside us, playing a private concert for Chris and I. I was in shock. Chris started talking about our year together, our love for each other, and our future ahead of us. He stood me up, got down on one knee, and asked me the question I had waited a life time for.. I SAID YES!!!!
We both cried tears of pure pure joy.
As I began facing reality, Chris told me to call my Mom!! I was so excited, my hands were shaking. As the first ring began, I heard screaming in the distance. I looked to my left, and my whole family, along with Chris’ whole family was running onto the beach, crying with giant smiles and wide open arms. We popped champagne and posed for pictures.
My dream fairytale is just beginning with the love of my life. I am so excited to see what is to come next!!
