Sal and I met through a mutual friend the summer before sophomore year of high school. I was going to meet my friend at her house and Sal was there with his friend, who was dating her sister. We hung out the first day and watched movies at her house. We continued to meet up as a group until Sal finally asked me to be his girlfriend via AOL Instant Messenger late one night. It seems so funny to say that now, but that was the way to communicate when we were that age! And of course, he was probably too nervous to ask in person.
How We Got Engaged: Sal lured me down to the city one night under the pretense of meeting up with friends for dinner at the Standard Hotel, overlooking the Highline park. When I got there, he insisted I come meet him in one of the rooms. (At this point, I knew what was up!) When I got there it was decorated with flowers, candles, twinkle lights and photos of us throughout the 10 years of our relationship hung all over.
He got down on one knee, pulled out the ring (a vintage 1920s rose cut that may have hinted at loving) and popped the question! We had a fabulous dinner at the hotel followed by chocolate mousse at Buvette in the West Village (best chocolate mousse in the city!). The night was perfect and, thankfully, no Instant Messenger was involved.
Our Engagement Announcement:
We wanted to surprise our friends with the news of our engagement. Every year we host a Christmas party for them so we planned to drop the news that night. Sal hid an iPod, which was recording the on our Christmas tree. The two of us got up to make a speech to welcome everyone to the party. At the end of the speech Sal said, “I want to thank Elise my beautiful…fiancé!” and I whipped out my ring. All of our friends started screaming immediately, and we caught all of their reactions on tape! It was such an awesome way to break the news and we love re-watching the video and laughing at everyone’s faces! We incorporated that video clip into a longer video that we used to announce our engagement to the rest of our circle.
Here’s the video, which includes clips and photos from our many years together as well as some photos from the night we got engaged:
