How We Met
Ryan and I met in my senior year of college at George Washington University, I was a Resident Advisor and he was a part of the safety team giving the Residential Staff a fire extinguisher demonstration. We got to talking and had lunch together the next week, I could never put a finger on it but the whole time we were getting acquainted I felt like we already knew each other or had met in some type of past life, it was like talking to an old friend. Every text message seemed to agree with what was on the other person’s mind and as corny as it sounds since day one we have finished each-others sentences. A few weeks after our first date I was on spring break with my girlfriends and in a digital age fashion, Ryan expressed over text message that when I was back in D.C. he would like to make our relationship official. That would be the first time I said yes…
How They Asked
Since we started dating we have seen each other through new jobs, a new home, two dogs, and my journey through law school. Needless to say, the last 5 years have been busy, but in the last few months, we had gotten on the same page that we were both ready for the next chapter. Every time we were watching TV and a commercial with an engagement theme came on, or, we walked past a jewelry store Ryan would joke, “maybe one day!” Then December 16th we had made reservations to go out to dinner to celebrate that I had finished my 5th semester of law school, since this was supposedly a celebration of an academic accomplishment the restaurant was going to be a surprise so I wasn’t suspicious when Ryan set the GPS to a random intersection in downtown D.C.
However, when we parked I noticed we were down by the national mall with the nearest restaurant a mile away, Ryan suggested we take a pre-dinner walk and we made our way to the Lincoln Memorial. At this point, my suspicion had turned into certainty as we walked up the marble steps, at this point I knew it was only a matter of minutes or seconds. We walked to the corner of the Lincoln and Ryan turned to me a said “You know how I’ve been saying maybe one day, well what I didn’t tell you is today is that day.” And as he said that he got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. And I said yes!
