How We Met
If you were to ask Blake and I how we met, neither of us would be able to tell you. We simply don’t remember. It wasn’t some magical chance happening or romantic meet-cute. It was just two people, in a mutual group of friends, who knew of each other. We were both in college when we met, at The University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). It’s funny actually because I knew him mostly through the guy I was dating at the time. I remember telling the guy I dated that he should hang out with Blake more because he was “such a good guy and really seemed to love the Lord”. Looking back now, I think its funny that he stuck out to me in that way. After college, we didn’t keep up, but probably would have said a quick “hello” if we ever ran into each other.
Although I don’t remember the first time we met, I clearly remember the night we reconnected. It was at a mutual friend’s wedding. We had talked and caught up briefly during the reception and then went our separate ways. That night had been a particularly difficult night for me in the men department and I remember sitting in my car at a gas station, 2 hours away from home, holding back tears and needing God to show himself to me in a big way. After filling up my car up with gas, Blake and his friend pulled up next to me and asked if I was driving alone. They ended up following me home to make sure that I made it back safely.
I thanked him profusely for doing, what seemed to him, something so simple. I remember telling him we should grab coffee sometime (which was exactly what had gotten me into trouble “in the men department” previously). Needless to say, he was a southern gentlemen and said “sure”, then never followed up on it, haha. A year later, almost to the day, he texted me and asked if we could get together and catch up sometime. I, not able to deny his good looks and southern charm, said “of course”. Blake, once again, did not follow up. And so a month later, I had to text him and ask if we were ever actually going to catch up. So finally we went on our first date and the rest is history.
how they asked
The night that Blake proposed, I had just returned home from a work trip and was completely exhausted. I am a youth director at a local church and had spent the past week on a middle school missions trip where I was the ONLY adult in a bunk room full of 6th grade girls. It was pure insanity!
I had slept all day, which Blake was happy to let me do since he was so nervous. I hadn’t even showered. Seriously gross! Around 5:30 or so he woke me up and asked if I wanted to go see a movie around 7. I agreed and we made plans to grab dinner and head to the movie. I packed my purse full of veggie sticks and sweaters, having no clue what was about to happen. On the drive, Blake said he needed to meet up with his brother to give him his backpack. Me, still being totally oblivious, listened as he made plans to meet at his brothers, finance’s, cousin’s house, where they were eating dinner (WHAT?!?).
When we arrived, Blake called his brother, who according to Blake, was running late. So we walked across the street to “Top of the World”, which is a beautiful overlook of the city of Birmingham (seen in picture above). This view is truly gorgeous, but it is also private property. I can be a rule follower at times, so when he started to open the gate of this private property, I kept walking! Behind the beautiful view in this picture is an absolutely gorgeous house that overlooks it. On the porch were 2 of my best friends, one of whom also happens to be a professional photographer (Love Be Photography). As I walked past the gate, Blake started to get mad at me for not “breaking the law” and going out to look at the view. As I turned around, I caught eyes with my 2 friends who were trying to hide with their cameras. Immediately, I knew what was happening and froze. From there, I walked straight to Blake and onto that beautiful yard where he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. We have never been more happy and this proposal could not have been a more of a perfect picture of the two of us!
Also, if you were wondering, we never went to see the movie. Blake had arranged a wonderful party, back at my house with all of my favorite people and favorite things. It was truly the best night of my life!
