Stephanie and Ryan

Marriage Proposal Ideas in West Marshall HS Basketball Game

How We Met

Ryan and I met in February 2008 at Simpson College in Indianola, IA. It actually is kind of funny how it all fell into place. He was there for a Senior Music Visit Day and I was a Sophomore in college. I thought he was pretty cute and he seemed really nice from the short encounter we had. I then proceeded to add him on Facebook and we began messaging each other. Pretty soon, he was coming to hang out with me and we found out that we both loved watching movies (even though our taste was very different at that time!). We talked on the phone every night that summer and when we started up at college in the Fall, (he was a freshman and I was a junior), we began dating.

We have had quite the ups and downs considering I moved 2 1/2 hours away for med school and then Residency and he had to move away for his job as a band director as well, but I knew that he was the one for a long time.

We have talked about marriage for a while now, but our paths always seemed different. After 8 1/2 years of dating, this summer we will finally live in the same place and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. No more just seeing each other on weekends. It will be amazing!

Engagement Proposal Ideas in West Marshall HS Basketball Game

how they asked

Ryan is the band director at West Marshall High School and I am finishing up my family practice residency 2 1/2 hours away. We have been dating for 8 1/2 years and met in college. We have been doing long distance and only seeing each other on the weekends for over 6 years now. So to say this proposal was a long time coming is an understatement. I joked with him that the longer he waited to propose the more elaborate it had to be…”YouTube worthy” I think were my exact words. On December 22, 2016, I went to the West Marshall basketball game to watch the pep band as I usually do. (All of his students knew at that point what was going to happen!). One of his students asked if I could video the pep band doing their typical halftime performance of “Cowbell”. I always video it, so nothing new there.

This time though, the student asked if I could video from center court to get the experience of the student body for a yearbook contest they were doing. Although odd, I didn’t really think much of it and filmed from where she told me to stand. Ryan began singing from the hallway (which I didn’t know) and I was so confused where his voice was coming from. He is kind of a goofy guy, so his singing didn’t surprise me. As soon as he started walking towards me, I knew what was happening then and there, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

He describes it as the same smile I gave him when we sat front row of the Taylor Swift Concert, (which for me, was the best deal ever!). When Ryan grabbed my hand and started talking to me, he was shaking and I knew this man was the best thing that has ever happened to me. Of course this was a guaranteed yes!

It was overwhelming when all of his students group hugged us, but also the greatest moment of my life. He was able to include his students, the ones we spend so much time with at many band events, with this amazing proposal that none of us will ever forget.

I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him!
