How We Met

Ryan and I met four years ago in culinary school in Chicago. A chance meeting – I was shadowing in the class Ryan was taking before starting as a student – turned into our very first date on December 3rd, 2012.

We were inseparable from day one, and our love of food and adventure bonded us at our very core. A year into our relationship, we even launched our passion project, RP Catering & Events, which led to several big event gigs around the city, features in local Home and Dining magazines, and two chances to compete on Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen”.

I knew through all of this that our relationship was special; we constantly challenged, supported, and brought out the best in each other which allowed for our biggest dreams to come true.

We planned an incredibly special night for our four year anniversary: a four stop dinner progressive in Chicago’s West Loop, including dinner at Duck Duck Goat, Stephanie Izard’s new restaurant. We started with drinks at The Aviary then made our way on to Duck Duck Goat for a round of delicious eats. The plan was to continue our night with a wine tasting at Fulton Market Kitchen, and that’s when things really amped up.

Arriving at Fulton Market Kitchen, we were guided upstairs to a private room by a hostess and as I made my way up the stairs, I heard the instrumental score from “Something’s Gotta Give” (a movie I love endlessly – and Ryan and I joke about regularly). I knew then something was up and as I rounded the corner, I was greeted by over 50 of our closest family and friends.

I was awe-struck (see *shock face* picture) and began to notice each person who came in for this special night: my family from Michigan, friends from California, Colorado, Florida, and Minnesota. After a few moments of mouthing “WTF”, Ryan took my hand and in front of all of these amazing people, recounted our very first night together four years ago. It was then that he got down on one knee and asked if I’d be his forever. Of course, I said YES!

Immediately following was a night of celebration with an impromptu engagement party, full of speeches, wine, and delicious food. Hands down, one of the most beautiful and perfect nights in my life.
