Rosie and Joseph
How We Met
I had first noticed Joseph at my church’s biggest event of the year, Landmark in January of 2016. He was down at the altar worshipping and it caught my eye. I didn’t think much of it until a few weeks later when I noticed him again while he was helping tear down after a church service. I continued to see this handsome man helping around whenever someone needed. His selflessness and servanthood caught my attention. I quickly began to learn as much as I could about this freshman college boy named Joseph. Mutual friends always said how sweet and kind he was. I was a junior in high school at the time and always watched him walk past the classroom to get to the other side of campus. I had to meet him.
September 9th, 2016 I finally met him through mutual friends and shook his hand and he gave a sweet warm smile. My heart melted. The next night Joe, a mixed group of friends and myself went to BJ’s after a conference service. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to fall out. My hands were clammy and butterflies were going crazy. Our friends made sure we would be sitting right next to each other. Everyone at the table had one reason for coming – so Joe and I could get to know each other. We were both nervous and you could see it from a mile away. I ate only 2 bites of my food and he hardly made eye contact. I thought he had no interest in me. However, once we were all in the parking lot to leave, Joe shook my hand and with the same warm smile told me how nice of a night he had. My heart melted and I drove home with a huge smile on my face. I was smitten. The next morning he texted me restating how much he enjoyed going to BJ’s and we have not missed one day of talking since then.
how they asked
Two weeks prior Joe had told me that we would be going to a rose garden and “fancy dinner date” with his parents in Sacramento. I automatically knew something was up because we never get super dressed up to eat unless we are celebrating. Our birthdays and anniversary weren’t until July so I had a feeling he was planning something special. We had always talked about getting engaged after his junior year of college so once classes ended in May, I was on engagement watch. Haha! There were a couple times I thought Joe was going to pop the question but didn’t so I tried not getting my hopes up too high for the fancy dinner.
The day of the proposal, I wore Joe’s favorite dress and the beautiful Kate Spade purse he got me for Christmas. I put on my promise ring with the thought of it possibly being the last time. Joe was so nervous that he asked me to choose his outfit for him. I had never seen him so nervous and that made me nervous! As we drove to Sacramento my hands were so clammy and my heart was racing but I put on a calm face. Once we parked across from the garden, Joe told me to put blindfolds on. I knew it was about to happen. I couldn’t take the smile off my face, I felt like I was walking on clouds, and couldn’t stop giggling. Joe was so nervous his voice was shaking and he was giggling too. Then he stopped me and removed my blindfolds and the tears began.
We started at an arch that had a written “Memory Lane” banner. He guided me through the rose bushes as we looked at about 30 pictures that we had taken through the years. The pictures were scattered on different rose bushes throughout the walk. Every picture brought back a flood of memories. Memories that I wouldn’t change for the all the money in the world because those are the memories that made us, us.
He then brought me to the center in front of the beautiful fountain where there were rose petals and tea candles adorned on the ground. He stood us in front of a table that had a big black memory box with “The Next Chapter” written on it for our new chapter of memories. Inside was a photo album to keep all of our next chapter photos safe. He spoke beautiful words to me and I could not stop crying. All my dreams were slowly coming true. He pulled out a little black box and got down on one knee. Took my hand and asked me to marry him and I said “yes!” He then replaced my promise ring with a beautiful engagement ring and we hugged and cried while I heard cheers from my parents, new family, and closest friends.
I am so excited for this next chapter. I get to marry my best friend, I have the ring of my dreams, and had the most beautiful proposal. Thank you, friends and family, for the beautiful surprise and all the love and support. Thank you, Jesus, for giving me the man better than my dreams. Thank you, Joe, for everything. I love you, Fiance!
