How We Met
Patrick and I met at his family’s restaurant. I am a bartender and he manages the building. We became best friends within the first few months. During that time I figured out he had a slight crush on me. His mom slipped her nickname for Patrick, and he turned 20 different shades of red. It was super sweet. We would grab drinks with the rest of the staff, and they saw it first.
They all said, “are you two seeing each other yet?” Well, it took us a couple more months to see it. I think both of us were a little burnt by our last relationships so we were a little blind. We ended up finally going on our first date to Philadelphia. I was vegan at the time, and he was not. He didn’t mind though. We’ve actually been back to that restaurant since. Finished off by some old school games at Barcade. Three years later, he popped the question!
How They Asked
The O’Connor family is very proud of their Irish roots. We go all out for the month of March. There is a parade in our home town on the first Saturday of every March. I design and build a float with help from the staff, friends, and family. My mind is a float, float, float for all of February, so needless to say, I did not see the proposal coming.
We were on the parade route, right around the judge’s table. There is when we grab my elbow and dropped to one knee. My first words were, “are you serious?” I must note I curse like a sailor so my second set of words were, “are you f***ing kidding me?”
Not the prettiest of words, but that’s just me. He says, “I’m not lying and I’m not kidding you. Will you marry me?” Well now I’m bawling my eyes out, and I hear my mom from the crowd. “Aren’t you going to say yes!” I turn to him and exclaim, “of course!” He jumped up and yells, “she said yes!” After the parade is always a big party, but this year was a little more special. We got to go back to the restaurant and have a post-proposal party-St. Patty’s Day themed!
