How We Met

I (Christina) met my wonderful fiancé when we were in the 8th grade in 2007, at Lincoln Middle School in San Angelo TX. We had a science class together and I sat near him. He had just transferred schools, but from the moment I saw him I had this feeling that he was special. We talked and hung out with the same friends, after middle school we went to the same high school. Lake View High School!!!!

Freshman year we had a Spanish class together and we would never pay attention!!!!! LOL!! We would get distracted and play tic-tac-toe or hangman on our worksheets, instead of paying attention. :) Then began sophomore year of high school we both played sports, Ricardo did soccer, track and cross country and I did soccer and softball that year. We would spend our lunch hour with each other and friends.

That year we also shared a science class and we would ride the bus together each day to and from class. We both lived near the high school so we would walk home together, Ricardo would walk me to the corner of my street then wave bye once I made it to my driveway, then continue to his house.

I was obvious that he was my best friend and that I was his, we shared everything, he would stick up for me and protect me. I knew I loved him, I loved him because he was such an important part of my life. It was during sophomore year that we exchanged phone numbers right before spring break and we have literally not stopped texting/talking since that day!!!

I remember many days during the summer when he would travel to Mexico with his family he would always make it a priority to find signal at night and call me so we could tell each other about our day.

During our 1st two years of high school many people would ask if we were dating and our response would be “no, that’s my best friend!!!!” Although, I was already in love with him and I secretly wished we were dating but, at the same time I didn’t want to lose my best friend.

It was the beginning of our junior year when I noticed he was acting a little strange, he would avoid me in the hall and didn’t talk to me that much for a few days. I eventually got annoyed and told him I didn’t want to be his friend if he was just going to avoid me.

On September 21st, 2010 he asked if I would wait for him after school when he got out of practice, he said he wanted to talk to me. I agreed and waited for him after school. When he got out of practice we talked and I told him how he is my best friend and that if he is mad at me that we needed to talk about it.

Ricardo told me he wasn’t mad at me then he me if he could kiss me!!! I said yes, and I KID YOU NOT!!!! NO JOKE!!! WHEN WE KISSED IT STARTED TO RAIN!!!!! He then took my hand and walked me home just like he always did. (NOW THAT WE LOOK BACK AND IT, WE LAUGH AND THINK IT’S A LITTLE CHEESY HOW IT STARTED RAINING WHEN WE SHARED OUR FIRST KISS, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT’S SO ROMANTIC!!!!!) Later that evening he told me that he has always like me and that he loves me and asked me to be his girlfriend.

Our junior and senior year were absolutely amazing!!!!! He continued in track and cross country and I did softball and cheer. He also join blue crew (a team of boys who run the school flags during football games when the team makes a touchdown)!! We were both in Science club, Spanish club and student council.

During our senior year we would help lead the pep- rallies, (me part of cheer as the maiden mascot, and Ricardo as part of blue crew). We graduated high school together in June of 2012!!!!

When the time came for graduation we both knew that we wanted to go to college and so we did! Ricardo went to Howard College and I went to Angelo State University. Although both of our schools were in San Angelo, there would be time where we didn’t see each other for a few days. I was hard, we both went to school full time and worked full time, we both lived at home with our parents so there was a period of time were we would only see each other once a week.

BUT!!! When we would spend time together it was so much more meaningful. Ricardo would join us on family vacation and holidays he even went with my family to do a 13.1 mile half-marathon!!!! 4 TIMES!!! Ricardo would always remind me that it was ME AND HIM IN THIS TOGETHER, THAT WE WERE PARTNERS IN THIS CRAZY WORLD!! When i would get frustrated or overwhelmed he would say “it will all be worth it in the end”. He would tell me to look at the bigger picture, that if we worked hard and stayed dedicated to our work and school that it would pay off in the end.

In November of 2013, (after 3 years of dating) Ricardo made me a promise. He promised me that we would have a future together, that one day we would get married. He gave me a James Avery promise ring that had two hearts that crossed and connected together. He said “without one heart the other is incomplete”.

I knew I wanted to marry him, but we were both still in school and wanted to graduate first. By that time all of our family and friends would ask us “when are yall getting married?” “When is the wedding?” we would just laugh and tell them that we had a plan and our plan was for both of us to graduate college first. Ricardo would joke and say as soon as Christina graduates we will get married!!

Ricardo graduated from Howard College in May of 2015 and I graduated Angelo State University in May of 2016.

how they asked

The day of my graduation I was so nervous, this was it finally after all of my hard work I was ready to walk that stage!!! I knew that this was just the beginning of EVERYTHING!! I would be able to start my career!!

May 14, 2016 when we were getting ready to cut the cake Ricardo asked if he could talk to me, me not knowing what was going on my response was “but… were about to cut the cake” he laughed and said just come with me.

So he walked me to the center of the backyard with all of our friends and family on the back porch staring at us! I was a bit confused, Ricardo is not the type to draw attention to himself, he then started to tell me how much he loves me and how we have waited and both graduated from college, then he said ” I’m about to get on one knee okay?”

I nodded okay, he then got down on one knee and jokingly said, “I think we’ve waited long enough, Christina Cehleste Diaz, will you marry me?” Of Course I said YES!!!!!!!!!! (Inside I said ITS ABOUT DANG TIME) LOL!
