How we met: Natalie and I met in August of 2009 at a restaurant that we both worked at. Natalie had just moved from Alberta to BC and had just started working there. During one of her first shifts she was walking with a large tray of glasses, lost her balance, and dropped the entire tray of glasses on the floor. After hearing the noise, I ran out of the kitchen and saw her standing over a sea of broken glass. Knowing that she had just started and feeling bad for her, I offered to clean it all up for her. Because of that moment, I ended up being her first friend in BC and introduced her to all the people that would soon be her friends.
how they asked: The engagement took weeks of brainstorming and planning. I had friends who owned a large empty warehouse which I, with the help of my friends, transformed into an art gallery. We spent all day setting up pipe framing and hanging white drapes over the pipes. There were lights and pictures set up all over the gallery of particularly special moments in our relationship (Our first selfie, the movie stub to our first date, the first poem I wrote her, etc).
The final art piece was a 6ft tall by 8ft long wall with 800 hand written post-it notes attached to the wall. I had her best friend bring her to the gallery under the impression that she was there for something else. When she arrived, she walked through the gallery while the song ‘Mirrors’ by Justin Timberlake was playing in the back. When she came to the end of the gallery, she saw the final art piece. In the middle of the wall was a pink post-it that read “Pull off”.
Underneath that was a post-it that read “You have stolen my heart” (Lyrics from the song ’Stolen’ by Dashboard Confessional”). I came out from behind the drape, said a short speech, and got down on one knee. At that moment, I had someone start the song ‘Stolen’. I had times it so that at the exact moment she said yes, and she did say ‘Yes’, it was the loudest, most epic part of the song.
