How we met: Jay and I dated for a couple months in 2011. Those dates were wonderful and we both knew it was the start of something special. We attended a policeman’s gala in which I vividly recall him saying to me, “This is the start of something good.” He was right but we wouldn’t learn that for another 2 years. But unfortunately, our timing was off and we decided to part ways, neither of us being quite ready for a new relationship. I was disappointed but we retained complete respect for each other as we said good-bye.
However, from 2011 until we met up again in 2013, we both later learned that we were thinking of each other throughout those 2 years. In 2013, I decided to reach out and say hello because he was in my thoughts. I didn’t expect much to come of it. He replied immediately to my email…and so we started again and haven’t look back. Although 2 years had passed, we soon found out that we picked up right where we left off. This time we were both ready to emerge ourselves into our relationship and each other.
how they asked: Jay and I were on vacation in Mexico. I had arranged to have some photos taken by Melissa because we didn’t have any really good pictures of us and I thought it would be fun. On our way to the hotel where we were meeting Melissa, I noticed that Jay was getting nervous because our driver was lost and could not find the hotel. I thought it was just because he didn’t want to be late. I had no idea it was because this was more than just having our picture taken.
As we were walking on the beach for our photos, Jay pointed to a small bag that was lying the sand and he nudged me to pick it up.
Inside the bag was a small bottle with a message in it. It said, “I love her (you) and that is the beginning and end of everything. Renee, will you marry me?” The quote was one of my favorite quotes by F. Scott Fitzgerald. When I looked up, Jay was on one knee.
In that moment, no one else existed on the beach.
We forgot Melissa was there snapping pictures.
He had also arranged for a romantic dinner on the beach that evening. The night was blissful. We basked in our engagement for the remainder of our trip and didn’t share the news with anyone until we returned home. For those few days it was our secret.
