Reena and Kaiwan

How We Met

Kaiwan and I met in October of 2008 during my sophomore year of college and his junior year of college at my brothers surprise birthday party at UCLA. We ‘dated’ for a few weeks/months…but I did not think he was serious about being with me or that interested in me…you know, college boys. We stopped talking, life went on, and for four years we did not speak nor did I allow him to come over to our house.

In May of 2014, my brother warned me that Kaiwan would be coming to his PT graduation in Vegas. I, of course, was not thrilled. I was told to be nice to him. That weekend, Kaiwan put up with my pestering and teasing, shared popcorn with me, and bought my best friend a hot dog. I was already starting to realize I never “really got over him.” That Sunday, Kaiwan asked me…or I asked him…(we debate over this) if we wanted to go somewhere to eat to ‘rehash’ the weekend…aka ‘rehash’ why we stopped talking to begin with. We went to Veggie Grill, ate, talked, and the rest fell nicely into place.

We began seriously dating after all my summer trips with my family/friends and became ‘official’ on August 5, 2014 when he took me to Napa for the first time and asked me to be his girlfriend! We were in a ‘long distance’ relationship for the first year. We both decided for the sake of our relationship, we should consider moving closer to each other. His job was stable and he had more opportunities in Northern California so I decided to move up north and venture into a whole new world (Aladdin reference).

how they asked

On January 10, 2016 Kaiwan and I ran a 15k. For myself, it was a big deal because I had never run more than 6 miles and without any training I did not think I would be able to complete the run! The run was 9.3 miles and Kaiwan had stated that he had a surprise for me when I finished the run. The surprise was a trip to Napa, a tour at the Inglenook Winery, a stay at the Cottages of Napa, and lunch at the restaurant where he asked me to be his girlfriend. Little did I know what I had in store for me and our little weekend getaway.

The next weekend after our run, Kaiwan and I got ready and headed to Napa. We did our usual trip around Napa prior to heading to the winery. This included english muffins at Model bakery and coffee from our favorite Napa coffee shop. We arrived at Inglenook and began our tour. At first, I was not too excited about the tour, but as we walked the property and learned more about one of our favorite wineries, I remember thinking to myself how cool it was that Kaiwan had booked this tour because at the end of the tour we got to make our own wine and we got to see places of the winery that are not open to the public. At the end, we were taken to a room that had a cheese plate and wine and we began the process of blending our own wines. While we tasted our individual creations, the tour guide stated that she was going to step out and get us dessert…I was quite excited for this. After she left, Kaiwan reached into his pocket. I thought he was taking out a card, but to my surprise, it was a jewelry box! He got down on one knee, told me that he had promised me when he first asked me to be his girlfriend that he would spend the rest of his life making me the happiest girl in the world and that this was his way of assuring that promise was fulfilled. He proposed!!

I was so shocked!!! The guide came back with bubbly and the staff took us around the winery to take pictures; apparently they had all known this was going to happen. To my surprise, Kaiwan had a limo (our chariot) waiting outside for us. We got in the limousine and I began calling my parents and friends only to find out Kaiwan had called my dad the night before to ask for my hand in marriage! We visited another winery and then headed to the Cottages of Napa where we spent the night eating pizza, my other true love.

I could not have imagined a more perfect proposal. And I can’t wait to spend my happily ever after with the love of my life.
