Rebecca and Brian's Machu Picchu Proposal

How We Met

Brian and I met in Tempe, Arizona in May of 2012. Brian recently moved to Tempe, Arizona, to complete is PhD in Power Electrical Engineering, and to run cross-country and track at Arizona State University. I (Rebecca) also ran at Arizona State University and graduate from ASU in 2010. One night I went to popular/trendy bar called Casey Moore’s to meet some old friends from the ASU Track Team. I was sitting around a table with all former and current collegiate athletes, and I remember watching a very tall, dark, and handsome man walk up to our table. Immediately I thought Brian was so handsome and better yet tall. Brian was very quiet and wearing a Boise State shirt (Brian went to Boise for his undergrad) around all ASU athletes. I really wanted to talk to him, so I pointed my figure at him, and said “I hate you!” Brian was shocked by my comment and all our friends started laughing. Later that night
we left the bar and went to another to go dancing. Brian was dancing with another girl, and I was not happy. I went up to Brian and pulled him away from her. After that night we started spending more time together and the rest is history.

how they asked

In July 2015, Brian and I traveled to Peru with our friends Rory and Karen. On July 1st, we made the long trip to the ancient Incan city, Manchu Picchu. We were so excited to be in such a beautiful and enchanting place and set forth to a day of exploring. Earlier in the year Brian and I had already gone ring shopping and talked about marriage, so I had a feeling that he would purpose very soon.Throughout the day I had in my mind that he has to propose at this amazing place. We hiked all-day and explored the ancient ruins. The day was coming to an end and we were just about to leave the park. For a brief moment I felt sad, because I thought that he might not purpose. Brian suggested we take one last picture in front of the iconic view on Machu Picchu. Brian said to our friends Rory and Karen a code phrase “Rory, can I have your glasses”, this meant it’s time to start videotaping and taking photos. With our backs toward the camera and looking off over the Incan City, I felt Brian trembling. Then the next
moment Brian got down onto one knee and said “It started with I hate you, to I like you, to I love you, and now I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” I said yes!

We will be married on April 16, 2016 in Sedona, Arizona.
