Raquel and Ryan
How We Met
Wadsworth, OH is where it all began. Ryan and I have known each other since elementary school. We grew up in the same hometown and were always in the same friend group. It wasn’t until our junior year in high school that Ryan showed interest in me. It started with some simple Facebook messaging flirting, to going out of his way to walk with me in the hallway and eventually taking me out on dates. Everything happened so quickly between us. As corny as it sounds, I truly knew he was the one. Our last year and a half of high school was spent supporting each other on the soccer and football field, date nights, and figuring out where we wanted to go to college. Fortunately, we were both smitten with the same school, Ohio University. Through all four years of college we had the time of our lives making new friends, staying in touch with old friends, and continuing to grow in our relationship. All of our college friends were astonished that we had stayed together as long as we did. Our senior year, it came time to make another big decision in our lives, post-grad life. Ryan quickly received a job offer in Chicago, IL and without hesitation I pursued jobs out there. It was never a question with Ryan and I. Never even a “well what if.” We always knew we wanted to be together and would work it out until we were happy together! May of 2016 we moved out to Highwood, IL where we have lived ever since. In June we got our big baby, Jasper who has been such a joy in our lives. We’ve spent the past year exploring Illinois, traveling home to visit friends and family, and traveling anywhere we could! Ryan and I love the outdoors. It’s a big passion of both of ours. This Christmas, his parents surprised us with a spring trip to the Mighty 5 (Grand Canyon, Arches, Caynonlands, Bryce and Zion National Parks). We were ecstatic and counted down the days until the big trip! Little did I know, that it would be the trip to change our life forever!
how they asked
Our trip began on May 18 with a flight from Chicago, IL to Las Vegas, NV. When we arrived at 11 pm, Ryan’s parents and sister were waiting for us at the airport in a big Winnebago RV. We drove straight from Vegas to the Grand Canyon so we could watch the sunrise. When we finally arrived at 4:30 am, it was only 23 degrees outside! We were all exhausted and freezing but knew we needed to get out there sooner than later to experience the whole thing. Sunrise was expected to be around 5:25 so we walked around, took pictures, and took in the incredible views. After the official sunrise and hundreds of pictures later, we were all ready to go in when Ryan said, “Hey, why don’t we get one last picture over her.” I ran over to get our quick picture as I was ready to hop back in the warm RV. We posed and smiled, and little did I know when I turned my head, Ryan was on one knee asking the big question, “Raquel, will you marry me?”
I was so taken aback. Between crying, having no feeling in my hands, and his family reaction, I don’t know how long it took me, but I finally said “YES!” He had kept it a secret from his family so his parents and sister were in just as much shock and awe as I was! But the celebration didn’t stop there, a group of tourists came running up to us with camera’s in our faces shouting “Congratulations! Kiss!” We spent a good five minutes just giggling and taking in the big moment. It truly was one of the most amazing moments in my life!
