Randy and Allie's Marriage Proposal on the California Coast
How We Met: We met at college in Omaha, NE which is where we currently live.
how they asked: Randy told me back in August that he spontaneously bought plane tickets for us to fly out to California to see our friends, and and that he needed a break from his first semester of medical school in Omaha. Little did I know he had been planning a proposal for months! He lead me to believe that he didn’t have time to make any plans for us that weekend (so that I wouldn’t suspect anything) and told me not to be disappointed if our friends couldn’t hang out with us. As a result, I was pretty disappointed that we’d be flying all the way out there and not get to see many friends, but nonetheless I was still excited for our weekend getaway.
We arrived in Los Angeles late Friday night, September 26th, and we were both exhausted but happy to see our friends Kristen and Caleb where we would be spending the night. On Saturday morning the 27th, I was taking my sweet time eating breakfast and getting ready, unaware that Randy was in the next room nervous that the proposal wouldn’t be on schedule. I remember saying, “We have all day to just hang out and do nothing, what’s the rush?” :) All I knew was that Randy had planned a gondola ride with our friends later that day on Coronado Island. My friend Carly urged me to wear this long green dress that I had purchased last summer, but it seemed too formal for what we were doing. I almost decided against it, but Carly insisted that we dress up for the gondola ride.
Soon Randy and I were out the door and on the road. The first stop on Randy’s agenda was a cute winery in Escondido. It was a perfect day – not too hot and not too cold – with beautiful blue skies with a light breeze. We ate pizza and wine outside on the patio overlooking the vineyard. As we were on our way out we asked these two women if they would take our picture, and one asked us if we were on our honeymoon! Little did I know that they were foretelling my future with Randy. He then drove us down to San Diego for the gondola ride. As we were driving, Carly’s boyfriend Jon called us to tell us that on their way down to meet us they has gotten into a little bumper to bumper accident – nothing serious, they wouldn’t be able to meet us for the gondola ride. This was part of the plan – a made up story so that Randy could get me alone for the proposal! Props to Jon’s acting abilities!
Randy had purchased a bottle of wine for us at the winery where we had lunch, so we enjoyed it on the gondola ride. I have never been on a gondola ride before, and I have to say that it was SO enjoyable, especially with my sweet man next to me. It was a perfect day to be on the water. After the gondola ride, Randy told me he had made plans for us to meet some friends for dinner in Newport Beach. However, along the way Randy suggested that we make a quick stop at Solana Beach in Del Mar and said, “We can’t come all the way to California and not walk around on the beach!” We found a parking spot on the Pacific Coast Highway and trekked down to the sand.
I felt slightly overdressed in my long dress, and we were surrounded by dogs and people wearing jean shorts and swimsuits. However, little did I know this was all part of Randy’s plan! He was very adamant about climbing up to this rocky cliff overlooking the ocean.
I was not so eager to climb in my dress and bare feet, but pushed those thoughts aside and followed him up the trail. When we got to the top it was completely empty, except for a couple sitting on a bench who quickly left once we arrived. Little did I know those people were photographers hired by Randy to capture the whole proposal! He called over me to sit by him on a bench, and I noticed that someone had left their sweatshirt so I proceeded to grab it.
Wrapped in the sweatshirt was an iPad (that Randy had hidden there), so he suggested I turn it on and see who it belonged to.
As I turned it on the words “Hello Allison” appeared on the screen, and I soon realized I was watching a video Randy had created for me. My heart literally melted! The video began with music and a slideshow of pictures and words highlighting great memories of our relationship. Soon after, little video clips of friends and family appeared, and everyone began talking about how much I mean to them. The video ended with the words “Allison Jade Beaver, I love you more than anything in this world.” This 10 minute video was the most incredible gift – filled with our best memories and my closest friends and family speaking words of affirmation into my life. I love you all!
At this point we were both in tears, and after several hugs and kisses Randy took me by the hand and led me to the edge of the cliff, got down on one knee, and said those three beautiful words, “Will you marry me?”
The rest was a complete blur as I was overcome with joy. I could not say yes fast enough and could not believe that this wonderful man wanted to spend the rest of his life with ME! After Randy proposed, he introduced me to the photographers and led me down the trail to the beach. We walked along the sand towards the water, and around the corner I discovered Randy had a beautiful table with chairs set up on the rocks overlooking the ocean.
On the table was a bottle of champagne, chocolates, and a bouquet of roses, with romantic music playing in the background. It was perfect! We popped some champagne and celebrated while onlookers clapped and smiled. It felt like a scene from the bachelor!
After spending some time on the beach and posing for more photos, we then journeyed back to Azusa where I was surprised once again with an engagement party planned and decorated by all our wonderful friends!
