How We Met
I first met Sanam when the two of us were dancers in our respective college dance teams. We started talking in April 2016 and I still remember how captivated I was by her personality from the very first day. Her warm, charming demeanor allowed me to really open up and be myself.
As we started to get to know one another and dive into each other’s interests, there was one TV show in particular that Sanam was obsessed with: ABC’s hit reality-TV show, The Bachelor. I had personally never seen it and really was not interested in learning about it until she slyly convinced me to watch the first episode of the upcoming season of The Bachelorette.
From then on, every Monday night was date night for us where we would FaceTime and watch Jojo go on her journey to find love. By the end of Jojo’s season, I knew I wanted something more from my relationship with Sanam. Before the season finale, I flew up to Sanam in Nashville and asked her to officially be my girlfriend by doing a small rose ceremony and giving her my “first impression” rose. She said yes and our beautiful journey as a couple began!
How They Asked
June 6th is a day that I will never forget in my life. I woke up and went down for breakfast with my family like any normal Saturday morning. Soon after breakfast, my mother told me about a package that had arrived under my name that was sitting in the bedroom upstairs. Because my birthday is June 10th, I had assumed it was a birthday gift from someone. However, as I opened the bedroom door, I saw rose petals all over the floor and bed along with a beautiful red dress + a date card (as seen in the TV show, The Bachelor). The card read “Sanam… Let’s find our fairy-tale ending. Be ready by 1:00. – Raj”
I knew at that point this wasn’t going to an ordinary early birthday celebration. I got ready and went downstairs a little bit confused since I didn’t know what to expect next. I stepped out on my driveway where a beautiful, black stretch limousine was waiting for me! My family and I hopped in, nervously since we had no idea where it would be taking us. As the limo took off from our home, we popped a bottle of champagne as we had a suspicion of what was coming next.
After a wonderful 50 minute drive, the limo pulled up in front of a gorgeous mansion that to me resembled the Bachelor Mansion as seen in the show. I walked through the front doors and into the back courtyard where I saw Raj waiting for me. As I walked up, he asked “Can I steal you for a second?”–a popular line from the show. We walked to where he had laid out the beautiful roses and he started sharing how he felt about me. He finally ended it by asking me if I would accept his final rose and if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I was over the moon as I emphatically said YES.
