How We Met
Trent and I grew up in the same hometown. Although he was a couple years older than me, I always still knew who he was because he was the older, cute boy. We both went to different colleges so we never really formally met. One summer night we were both out at a friends house and he convinced me to use my fake ID to go downtown with them. I didn’t hesitate when Trent Traxler told me I should come! We hit it off right away that night. But we both went our separate ways for college in the fall and didn’t talk at at all. Well Christmas break rolls around and we didn’t waste any time this time with getting to know each other more since we both knew how much fun we had the first time. One of the first nights we were hanging out at a bar with all of our friends, I forgot people were even around I was so captivated by him. All I remember thinking was “I’m going to marry this man.” I just knew it. I wasn’t even listening to the words he was saying. I’ve always heard that when you know, you know. Well this happened for me RIGHT away! We decided to try long distance for a couple semesters and thank god we did because the rest is history.
how they asked
Trent and I have been dating for 3 years now and we love to go on little weekend getaways, so I didn’t think anything of it when he said he would plan a surprise weekend getaway for my birthday. We headed up to Duluth, MN for the weekend since we had been there before and loved it. Since he made all the plans for the weekend I was just going with the flow. He told me that “a buddy” of his went to school in Duluth and said that ships come into the pier at 3:30pm and we HAD to be down on the shoreline in time to watch them come in. Once we got down there he walked me down to the shoreline and I quickly realized that his “buddy” was wrong because there were no ships coming in. I was actually kind of disappointed because I was excited to watch them come in! (At this point I had no idea what was going on because he was not nervous one bit) I started to continue walking but he grabbed my coat jacket belt and said “Let’s just stay here for a minute” The idea started to turn in my head. I could tell he was starting to get a little nervous and this is when he started to tell me how much he loves me and asked me if he could give me something. He reached for his coat pocket zipper and THAT is the exact moment in this picture I knew he was proposing to me! I couldn’t say anything but “No way, Trent, No way!” He got down on his knee and asked me to spend the rest of our lives together!
After it all happened, he said “Do you hear that?” and he pointed over to a lady sitting on a bench. “I hired a secret photographer that photographed the whole thing!” I was speechless I couldn’t even comprehend what just happened and what was going on! I later on found out that his “buddy” didn’t exist and he made all of it up to get me to that exact spot at that exact time.
He proposed on the Friday that we got up to Duluth. We wanted to tell our parents in person and since we had just gotten up there we decided to take the rest of the weekend to not tell anyone and to take the weekend to enjoy it and just take it in. It was the hardest thing to not tell everyone right away, but definitely worth it for us to enjoy that special time together!
