How We Met
Kevin and I first met the summer of 2013 when we were in our single ready to mingle, always going out phase. We were introduced funnily enough by my friend who was his sisters boyfriends cousin (I know super confusing) in line while waiting to get into a club in San Francisco. We started chatting in line and ended up getting a couple drinks together inside and after that.. it was history. JUST KIDDING! Kevin was based in San Diego at the time so after that we became friends on Facebook and even though we chatted here and there, we were both still young and wild so nothing became of it. We also ended up being in relationships with other people for the next 2 years and remained distant social media friends.
Fast forward to 2016, both of our relationships didn’t work out (obviously) and we happened to both be at Coachella! And what do you know, Kevin decides to slide into my Snapchat DMs on the LAST day to see if I wanted to meet up. At first, I was hesitant, I even showed my best friend like, “OMG look who freaking messaged me, I don’t know if I want to meet up with him.” But as fate would have it we ran into each other TWICE – which is pretty much impossible at a large event like Coachella – and he ended up hanging out with my friends and me for the rest of the night.
After that event, we kept in touch by texting for a bit and it got to the point where I was honestly confused on whether or not he was interested or just saw me as a friend. It got to the point where I was over it and didn’t even want to date when he finally asked to meet up. And I told him we could gym together and it wouldn’t be a date. Looking back I realize that he was smart about because – what do you do after gym? you eat. So then we went to a restaurant after and it ended up being a semi-date. We chatted for hours and it felt so laid back and easy, but I was still skeptical because we had so many trips coming up I figured we would just die out like before. But after a month of my traveling to Portland, and Kevin to Chicago and Peru – we kept talking through it all and after he got back we went on our first trip to Mendocino, CA. We spent the day walking along Glass Beach and discovered a BOMB fish and chips place for dinner in the cove. And we agreed to make a trip up there every year. After that trip, we spent a lot of time together and saw each other almost every day, and a month later, he asked me to be his girlfriend!
how they asked
I honestly have no idea how he got me to semi-plan my own proposal without knowing but I had suggested glamping in Mendocino with my best friend and her boyfriend and planned it for the longest time, I even had a spreadsheet itinerary of what I thought we should do! And he somehow incepted it into my mind that we should show them Glass Beach! Looking back at it now I guess it was pretty obvious but I had made up my mind that he was going to pop the question later in the year on another trip.
On the day of the proposal I was so tired I wanted to nap instead and skip Glass Beach and then head straight to dinner at our favorite fish and chips place but he texted my friends and told them to not let me sleep. And let me tell you, I do not like it when I’m not allowed to sleep. Finally, around 4:30 PM I begrudgingly got in the car to go to Glass Beach and once we walk down to the actual beach he said, “We should recreate our first selfie!” And after looking at the result he said, “I can’t believe it’s been over 2 years since we first came here and the last time we were here was a year ago!” And of course being a grumpy sleepy girl I interjected, “Actually we were just here last September-ish, so it’s been less than a year.” And he did not skip a beat and said, “Yea. Anyways…” And he starting saying something about how he appreciates me and honestly I don’t remember too clearly because started kneeling down suddenly and I think my brain just couldn’t believe it was happening.
When it finally clicked, I literally screamed, “IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?”. After many tears and more photos, we ended walking back up towards the parking lot and I was surprised AGAIN by more friends and both of our families waiting to celebrate with us. I really can’t have dreamed of a better proposal. We talked about our future for so long and it still hasn’t hit me that it’s becoming reality. Thinking about it now is making my heart beat faster, and I cannot wait for the future with him.
