How We Met

Joe and I met when I was 14 and he was 16. We’ve been dating for 11 years now and were high school sweethearts, but we didn’t go to the same high school. We met through a mutual friend who transferred from my high school to his, which was 30 minutes away. (Our parents were very relieved when we both got our driver’s licenses!) They played sports together and his friend was interested in dating one of my friends. Joe apparently saw a picture of me on MySpace that caught his eye, and that’s how we initially started talking (remember this is in 2007 haha) At that point, I still had a monthly texting limit and I went over the limit every single month until we finally got unlimited texting.

We talked to each other over the phone for a couple of months before we finally met in person at a movie theater. We officially started dating on my 15th birthday on March 23, 2007, and we’ve been inseparable ever since! Joe graduated high school a year before I did, so we were “long distance” for a year when he went to college at the University of Kentucky until I joined him the next year. Now we still live in Lexington with our dog, Chance.

how they asked

Joe and I were visiting a couple of friends in Colorado for a week. We took one day to go skiing and stayed in Breckenridge that night. It was my first time skiing, so Joe was hesitant on which night to propose based on how I felt after skiing. Skiing ended up being great, so everything was on track to go as planned.

We had reservations at Relish, an amazing restaurant in downtown Breckenridge, so we all got dressed nicely for dinner. They had planned on taking the gondola up to a nice view of the landscape before dinner, but unfortunately, at the last minute we found out it closed earlier than expected. So, we decided to drive to Boreas Pass for a great view.

Well, we started driving that way and ran into a roadblock that basically said the road is not maintained during certain months, so it’s closed to vehicles. In my mind, I figured we would scrap that idea and head on to dinner. I mean we’ve got great views from skiing and plan on going hiking for the rest of the week, so what’s the big deal, right? But they all seemed adamant on finding an amazing view, so our friend found an article online by a Breckenridge local who recommended walking down Boreas Pass Road for about 7-10 minutes to an amazing view.

So, we parked the car and began walking through the snow (mind you, I’m wearing wedges) I was thinking, “Are we seriously about to walk through snow in these outfits just for a view? It better be worth it!” So we finally reach the incredible view of the mountains to the left and the city to the right. Joe tells me to go stand in front of the view of the mountains. I waited on him and apparently, he and his friend had to switch the camera to the ring right in front of me and I didn’t even notice! We both walked to where I assumed we’d take a cute picture, but Joe ended up getting down on one knee and proposing! It was the best moment I could’ve asked for. Needless to say, the walk through the snow was absolutely worth it!
