Thinking of proposing in Hawaii? We love the idea! Whether you’re a thrill-seeking duo looking for your next great adventure, a couple of foodies, or two people who just love to kick back and relax on the beach, the Hawaiian islands have something for everyone.
If you’ve never been, start with checking out this great guide from Hawaii’s Tourism Board, then feel free to modify any of the ideas below to pull of an amazing proposal!
A lot of times, adrenaline can heighten the experience and emotion of the proposal, so use it to your advantage! Spend the day outdoors ziplining together or try a kayaking trip off the coast of Hawaii Island (this is island that’s known for exploration and adventure).
If you want something truly breathtaking, you can do an early morning hike proposal during the famous sunrise at Haleakalā on Maui. Bundle up, it can get very cold at 10,000 feet above sea level. It could honestly be the most beautiful place in the world to propose, and the perfect reason to get cozy together under a blanket!
(TIP: Be careful with that ring! If a box is hard to carry, wear a collared shirt and then attach the ring to a necklace!)
The island of Kauai is a great place to relax, unwind, and rejuvenate. Start your day with tons of pampering – couples massages, facials, and manicures (she’ll thank you for her extra pretty hands later). After you’re all dolled up and the two of you are looking and feeling your best, pose for a photoshoot, propose on the beach, or get engaged at a nice restaurant. Just make sure that there’s a photographer on hand to capture this beautiful moment!
(TIP: Have a photographer approach you and ask to take photos for a resort brochure they’re working on. She’ll be excited to participate and you’ll capture her face perfectly when you end up getting down on one knee in the middle of it!)
Want to go the totally private route? Look no further than the island of Lanai. Known for serenity and relaxation, Lanai is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the company of one-another. Consider proposing on a secluded balcony overlooking the ocean then celebrate with a special dinner at your resort or by ordering room service for the two of you. The Four Seasons Resort Lanai will be reopening in February after a multi-million dollar renovation, promising to be one of the premiere luxury experiences in the islands.
Maui is also a great island for this type of proposal. You can spend the day out and about exploring any of the charming small towns that make up the island, then head back to the resort to propose privately and enjoy some romantic alone time.
(TIP: if you do want to include your friends and family in it somehow, have them send you a video and then create a video montage with all their love and best wishes. Play it for her after she says yes and she’ll love that you included them even if they weren’t physically there!)
Is the way to your partner’s heart through their stomach? Think about visiting Oahu, the island known for its cuisine. Home to the majority of Hawaii’s population, Oahu is the perfect place if you are considering a large-scale, public proposal. Full of gorgeous historic landmarks such as Iolani Palace, the Chinatown art walk, downtown Honolulu and of course, Pearl Harbor, the proposal location opportunities are endless (plus there will be tons of restaurants and bars to celebrate at after.)
(TIP: Having the chef write “will you marry me” on a plate has been done. A lot. Instead, have the dessert menu be a heartfelt letter you wrote with the ring hung from a ribbon inside.)
Molokai is the island you want to visit if you are looking to unplug from your fast-paced life and have some true alone time. Go for a mule ride for a proposal to remember at Kalaupapa National Historical Park or hike through the rugged terrain and experience the untouched wonder of the mountains.
(TIP: It will be hard to capture the proposal if you’re isolated, so consider getting a GoPro for the trip and make sure you practice using it before hand.)
On the fly proposals
Know you want to propose during your Hawaiian getaway but aren’t sure how or when? That’s fine! Just enjoy your time together and when the moment feels right, #LetHawaiiHappen. No matter when or where you propose in Hawaii, you can’t go wrong. Sometimes the best memories of traveling in Hawaii are the unplanned moments in your “planned” vacation.
(TIP: Beware that without a plan, you might have some extra nerves, but don’t let this dissuade you. Just practice what you’re going to say a little bit more so that you don’t forget entirely when the moment hits you.)
