How We Met
We met in 2014 in college at a bar where I saw him holding two pitchers of beer with a big smile on his face in my direction. He was so handsome, I can still picture the face he made. He asked for my number that night and we quickly fell in love. He’s a Canadian hockey player and I’m American. So, after graduation, he decided to fulfill his dreams of playing professional hockey in Europe. I was sad about him being so far but I was also excited for him to go after his dreams. He flew over to Sweden in September 2017 and it was the hardest goodbye we ever had up until that point. We were used to long-distance but this was a whole new test to our relationship.
I decided last minute to fly over to Europe for Christmas and backpacked with some of our college friends. He came back in April and he decided to play professional hockey in Virginia where I moved with him for a few months before deciding to take a job in New York City, he was so supportive of me. I decided to go back for my master’s in Buffalo, New York to be closer to him in January 2020. It was a big step for me and I was hesitant, but he supported me just as I supported him throughout his hockey career. We’ve always been able to support each other in our endeavors and I think that’s what makes us work so effortlessly. We learned how to be individuals but love each other unconditionally even when times were hard.
After living together in Buffalo for three months, Covid happened. He didn’t have his visa yet, so he wasn’t able to live in Buffalo but his parents’ house is only 20 minutes over the border so he was driving back and forth to be with me. In March, the government decided to shut down the US/Canada border to slow the spread of the virus. He had to work in Canada and I couldn’t cross the border to go see him. Every day on my way to work I looked at his hometown across the Niagara River, he was right there but we still couldn’t see each other. It was so painful. We were separated by the border for 271 days until he flew over the border to come and see me for Christmas. We were so happy to finally be together, it was the biggest test of our relationship and we made it. It brought us even closer together.
How They Asked
On his first trip to my hometown on Long Island, we went to the fire island lighthouse. It was one of our first dates and we had so much fun, it’s so beautiful. After such a difficult year for us, he thought now would be a great time to propose when we reunited. He asked me to go for a walk with him and my parents at the same lighthouse and we climbed to the top.
He noticed it was too windy at the top to propose there so we walked down to a little beach on the water and he asked me to take a picture. He whispered in my ear I love you so much and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. That’s when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I’m so happy we never have to be apart again. Ever! The best Christmas present ever.
