How We Met
We met my freshman year of college…he was a junior and I had just moved out to California to start school. I remember my sister coming to visit in October and pointing Henry out to me…”he’s CUTE” she kept saying. He made his way over to us and, in an attempt to flirt, pretended he didn’t know my name. Somehow it worked…we started dating that February and have been inseparable ever since. He is my best friend, my biggest supporter, and the most amazing human I have ever known. Almost 7 years later, and I can’t believe we get to spend the rest of our lives together!
How They Asked
It was 2 days after his birthday and we were coming off of a crazy-busy couple of weeks. The night before the proposal, I planned a little birthday party for Henry with all of his best friends…to my surprise, almost no one showed up in fear of spilling the beans on what was to come the following day. I woke up in the morning annoyed that everyone had bailed and got ready for work. I thought I had a company outing at 4 PM, so at the end of the day, I hopped in the car with my team and took a drive down to Marina Del Rey. We met my boss by a boat dock, to which I screamed in excitement, “ARE WE GOING ON A BOAT?!” My co-workers walked with me towards the dock and upon opening the gate, told me to walk down first, and that I was the only one who would be going. I immediately shouted, “What are you doing?! What are you doing?!” And they told me to keep going.
At that moment, the most indescribable but intuitive feeling came over me and I just started to sob as I made my way down the dock. Low and behold, Henry appeared from the boat allllll the way at the end of the dock. He came to meet me halfway, led me to the bow of the boat, and got down on one knee. I was SHOOK. I always teased him and said that if and when he proposed, I would know. We’ve lived together for three years and share a car – how couldn’t I know!? But he surprised me, swept me off my feet, and at that moment, made me fall in love all over again. It was the most special experience of my life and I will cherish it forever.
After screaming, crying, and discovering the photographer and videographer aboard the ship with us, we sailed out into the ocean for sunset and celebrated with a glass of champagne as I grilled Henry on how he was able to pull off this surprise. And the fun didn’t stop there… the boat docked at the Marina Del Rey Hotel where I was told we had a suite for the night.
We entered through the back of the hotel and Henry walked me through the restaurant downstairs. We turned a corner and sixty of our closest friends and family from all over the country were screaming congratulations as we arrived. Another surprise. Go figure! We celebrated all night long and ended the night dancing with our friends and eating cookies with our faces on them. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better proposal and still find myself saying pinch me!
