How We Met
Michael and I actually first met through a mutual friend. She is one of my best friends from church that I practically grew up with and he knew her from a restaurant they used to work at together. One night, she invited Michael to our youth group service because he told her how he’s been looking for a new church to be involved with. We welcomed him with open arms and, because of his humorous and super-personable self, he hit it off really well with the group! Michael kept coming back each week and also started to hang out with my circle of friends, which allowed us to get to know each other more but on a just-friends basis. Soon enough, feelings started to form and he finally asked me for my phone number. We started texting and calling each other every day since!
He asked me to be his girlfriend on March 25th, 2012 but it wasn’t until after a few months later in June when Michael and I were able to sit down with my parents one evening and asked for their blessings to officially “date DATE” one another. You see, I was raised in a Christian home where I wasn’t allowed to date until I turned 18 years old so we both wanted to start this relationship on a good note with my parents, especially with Michael being my very first boyfriend! Call us old-fashioned, but I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my first relationship with the first (and only) man I’ve fallen in love with.
We’ve been together for almost four and a half years now and we both couldn’t be any happier, for obvious reasons of course!
how they asked
The mountains are one of my favorite places to be in the entire world. This was actually our third time going this past year alone! This summer’s ventures to the mountains seemed like any ordinary trip. We did so much such as driving along Blue Ridge Parkway, swimming in natural pools that were near waterfalls, and even climbing to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
One night, there was a family dinner arranged at a restaurant inside of Pisgah Inn. It’s a beautiful inn perched on top of Mount Pisgah along Blue Ridge Parkway. The views during the day are absolutely breathtaking, but this was my first time seeing it while the sun was setting.
When we got there, Michael was very keen to start taking pictures. As the Instagram-aholic person I am, usually I’m the one who has to ask first! So obviously I followed behind him enthusiastically to this viewing spot where you could see mountain peaks as far as the eye could see. With my back facing towards the inn to get that scenic shot already imagined in my head, little did I know that a proposal was unraveling behind my back. Literally!
At this time, Michael joined in the picture. He kinda goofed around, putting out to the mountains and to the skies to show me who-knows-what but I saw it as a cute pose and played along. We shared a kiss as a final pose and I thought that was the end of it. Suddenly, he gave me this HUGE bear hug to show that he wasn’t done with me just yet. Before I could say something, he started to share his sentiments about us by saying how much I’ve changed his life. To be honest, I initially saw it as him trying to tease my gullible self yet again so I told him to stop. But he didn’t.
He kept saying the sweetest things, most of which neither of us can even remember, and it wasn’t long before tears came to his eyes. We’ve been dating for almost four and a half years and I’ve never seen him so emotional like that before. The next thing I know, Michael was getting down on one knee as he pulled out a ring box from his pocket with the biggest smile on his face as he asked me to marry him.
My immediate reaction: “ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?”, with tears of absolute pure joy streaming down my face. A very brief but dramatic pause fell suit only because I was left completely breathless! Michael’s response: “Waiting for an answer, haha!” And, of course, I said yes.
All of a sudden, I heard very loud cheers and applause coming from behind us. Michael turned me around and what I saw before me was something my already-overwhelmed heart couldn’t handle. Not only did I see his family (the ones we’ve been staying with) AND his parents (who I already knew were on their way to meet up with us for dinner), but Michael gave me the ultimate surprise by inviting my parents and little sister there as well.
They drove more than 4 hours just for the special occasion. I couldn’t stop crying!
The rest of the night was spent celebrating! There was no better way to start it off than with a dinner with the most spectacular view. To this day, it still blows my mind thinking about exactly how much time, detail, and planning Michael dedicated to this beautiful proposal story we’ll be sharing to all of our loved ones in the weeks to come.
I am still on cloud nine. I mean, my fiancé truly pulled off the most perfect proposal of my dreams.
Michael, “you did good”.
