How We Met
We met on the dating app Hinge. Will had moved to my hometown of New Haven, CT the previous summer and ironically lived down the street from my parents, but we had never crossed paths. We had our first date planned at a wine bar called August, and that day there was a huge snow storm. Will had gone home to New Jersey the night before to see family, and had taken an early train back to make sure the frosty weather conditions wouldn’t keep him from our date, which I thought was a good sign. Luckily for us, the wine bar we had planned to go to was open and within walking distance from both of our places.
I was hoping he would be worth my trudging out in the cold and snow, and praying I didn’t get frostbite on the way there. The inside of the bar was warm and cozy, and once he arrived we instantly hit it off! We shared a bottle of red wine and even closed the bar down. He was quite the gentleman and walked me all the way back to my door in the snow even though it was in the opposite direction of his place. I like to say we met during a snowstorm in August :)
how they asked
We planned an amazing two week vacation to Italy shortly after moving in together, and started the trip in one of the most romantic and unique cities in the world, Venice. It being our last night there before moving on to our next stop, Will suggested going out to dinner on the Grand Canal. He had brought a nice suit jacket on the trip, and claiming it would be too hot to wear in the other places we were going, he wore it that night. Thinking I would match him, I put on a vintage dress my mother had lent me for the trip, but not thinking much of it that we were a little more dressed up than usual.
We went out for drinks and then walked over to the Grand Canal when the sun was setting. Suddenly Will began picking up the pace while he was walking and he started to look left and right. I thought he was searching for a restaurant to go to. Suddenly he came to an abrupt halt next to a dock right on the water and asked if I wanted to stop and watch the sunset for a bit. I agreed and walked over to the water’s edge with him. The canal surface sparkled in the fading summer sunlight as we watched the boats pass. Will pulled me close to him and I could feel his heart beating fast, as he told me from the first day we met he had known that I would be someone special and he was so excited to start our lives together. I started to think that something big was about to happen and before I knew it, Will was getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him! I still remember how the sunlight made his smiling face glow as I said yes and he slipped the most gorgeous engagement ring onto my finger.
He then said that we had reservations at the restaurant next to where we were standing, with a table overlooking the canal and a bottle of prosecco at the ready! It was certainly the most magical way to begin our lives together in the most romantic place in the world.
