How We Met
We met on a school bus in our final years of high school. We were on a trip to a 14km fun run in Sydney. Olivia sat behind me on the bus and we spent hours talking and getting to know each other. It really felt like we knew each other well by the end of the weekend.
We spent time together for about 8 months before we actually got together. When we were introduced to each others parents we found out that our parents have been friends for years and her dad actually held me in the hospital when I was born. We have been together ever since.
how they asked
We were planning a trip to New Zealand to visit the South Island. I had met with Joel weeks before the trip to tell him our plans and how excited we were. He told me straight away that he would love to come along and document us on the trip. It was in that moment that I decided I should actually use this opportunity to propose to her. I had wanted to do it years ago but never quite new how I wanted to ask her. I started the design process of what rings she would and wouldn’t like. I spent weeks trying to figure out the best possible ring for her.
Joel and I are both wedding photographers. We both share the passion of capturing moments so it was working out well that we could have him come along without Olivia being suspicious. I left the decision up to her if she wanted him to come along so it didn’t seem like something was different.
The proposal plan didn’t actually work out how I wanted but it was perfect. Joel woke Olivia (she was sleeping in the van). I was already up on the mountains taking some photos of the mountain ranges. As she came up onto the mountain we both walked out onto the edge and started talking about how beautiful it was.
I told her to turn around and look out at the mountains. I got down on one knee and asked her to turn around. As she turned around I looked at her face. I will never forget it. She was so shocked and so emotional. We both hugged and teared up for a good few minutes. It was amazing. I will never forget the feeling.
