Nolan and Kalina's Skydiving Proposal
How We Met: 12/30/08 – New Year’s Eve Eve – I came home from college for New Year’s weekend and went bowling with a couple of friends. While I was walking out of the bowling alley I saw that my friend April was there with a few friends so we stopped to say hi! I met all of her friends with the exception of one (Nolan) because he was bowling. April mentioned that they were going downtown for New Year’s Eve asked if I wanted to go and I told her I would call her later. Not too long after she called and said that her friend Nolan thought I was cute and that I needed to go with them. So, I said why not!
12/31/08 – New Year’s Eve – A big group of us met at Nolan’s house to carpool and when we walked in the door I asked April “Who’s that? He’s cute!” Later April introduced me to the “cute boy” and his name was Nolan. Instead of an awkward handshake we hugged – and for anyone who knows me – this scored major points! When we got downtown to Taste and Thirst I bought him a shot and a beer to thank him for driving us and it must have impressed him because we danced and laughed all night! Little did I know that I had just met the man of my dreams!
The next couple weeks were full of texts, emails, phone calls, Skype sessions, lots of drives back and forth from Oceanside and Long Beach and more laughter than you could imagine. We quickly fell in love and have been together ever since!
how they asked: First a little bit of a back story: When Nolan and I were first dating we lived in separate cities; I was still at Long Beach State and he was living in Oceanside, so we emailed, Skyped, and talked on the phone a lot! I had told him that skydiving was in the top five on my bucket list and the first promise he ever made me was that he would go with me! Later that year we went to Hawaii and got all the way through the skydiving safety training before a storm rolled in and we couldn’t jump. At this point Nolan was thankful because he has never actually wanted to jump out of a perfectly good plane! Since then when we pass a skydiving place I would say “They want us to go with them!” or “Don’t they look like they are having so much fun!”
The night before I had made a bunch of flower arrangements for a wedding and Nolan said that he wanted to go with me to help me drop them off and then we could go do something fun after! So, the morning of we had coffee and breakfast just like any other Saturday morning and loaded up the car and headed down the 76. When we got into Oceanside he mentioned that he had to go to Iron Sights (Gun Store) to pick up something for his gun (a totally normal request) and we had enough time so I said ok! To get to Iron Sights you have to pass Tsunami Skydivers and I said “Don’t they look like they want us to go with them!” and he pulled into the parking lot and said “Well, we are!” I didn’t know if he was joking or serious! I kept asking him “Are you Serious?”, “What about the flowers??” and I kept telling him “If you are joking this is a mean joke!” But, we went in, he had a reservation, he brought me an extra shirt, we filled out the paperwork, and by the time we got back to the truck all the flowers were gone! I was giddy and beyond excited to skydive but I was so worried about the flowers – I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing with them. Later I found out that Brittany and the best florist ever – Leaf it to Lexi – were all part of the plan and had it taken care of! At this point I still had no idea what was happening because I was so surprised and so excited to finally be jumping out of that plane! Surprise #1 – Skydiving!
We took the safety course, they suited us up, strapped on our parachutes and gopros and up we went in the plane! I was so excited I just kept telling the skydiver that was taking me to do as many flips and turns as we could! Nolan jumped first and I jumped shortly after! Freefall was about 50-60 seconds and it was so amazing! Oceanside is breathtaking from the sky and I could not stop smiling! When we got to the ground, Nolan had already landed and ran over!
We both said we did it and had a congratulatory hug! (As I am writing this I am getting the butterflies) Then as Nolan releases me from our hug he said “I have a question to ask you” then he gets on one knee. (As I am writing this I now have goosebumps) I have already lost it I am crying and I have no idea what he is saying! All I remember is at one point he pulled my hand from my face and said to give him my hand! He slipped the ring on got up and gave me the biggest hug and I asked him “Is this real life? Did we just get engaged?” The whole thing was surreal – I was laughing, crying, and shaking all at the same time and my heart felt like it grew 100x! He must really love me because he actually jumped out of a perfectly good plane for me! Surprise #2 – We got engaged!
After hugging a hundred times, skipping back to the van, and celebrating with the skydiving team we packed up and headed over to the Tap Room across the street for a celebratory beer! We parked and as we were walking to the front door he said “Actually, I have one more surprise for you!” and my reaction was “I don’t think I can handle any more surprises today!” But as we walked over to Legacy I saw his mom’s car and my dad’s truck parked outside and I thought how fun we get to celebrate with our parents! But, to my surprise so many of our favorite people were waiting inside to celebrate! I was in complete shock, for once in my life I had no tears! We hugged our parents and I kept it together until I saw his sister Demi – All of our sister dreams had just come true and we both lost it with so many tears of pure happiness! It was so special to be able to hug our family and friends in celebration! Surprise #3 – Engagement Party!
For the rest of the day we got to celebrate with family and friends! I cried happy tears too many times to count that day! I have never been so surprised, so overwhelmed with emotions, so excited, and so incredibly happy in my life! Every time I think about that day I get the butterflies, goosebumps, and tears!
I cannot thank Nolan enough for putting so much thought and effort into his proposal and the whole day and for making me feel so special! I could not have dreamed up a more perfect proposal and I cannot wait to be his wife!
