How We Met
Thomas and I met in 2014, we both attended The College of Staten Island. Thomas was on the basketball team and I was a cheerleader so we had friends that ran in the same circles. However, our first conversation didn’t happen in person but on Twitter. Yes everyone, he slid into my DMs! Soon after DMs led to texting, then onto some casual hangouts with friends. We went on our first date May 31st and we weren’t quite sure where this would lead. We both had very different ideas of what our summer would look like and thought we would be in our lives for just a short time. After 3 months of dating, we both knew that a short time wasn’t what either of us wanted and we made our relationship official.
How They Asked
Thomas had an extremely long work week and we had made dinner plans for August sixth. On that day I had woke up with a migraine and wasn’t sure if I would even make it to dinner. I took an extremely long nap and felt a little better when I woke up, so I pulled myself together and Thomas picked me up. Thomas said the reservations were at 6 and we were at the place almost an hour early. He proposed a plan to go walk around Snug Harbor Botanical Garden to kill some time until dinner.
It was a struggle getting me to say yes to this because I still wasn’t feeling the best and hadn’t eaten all day… I even asked if we could stop at a deli for snacks lol! We began walking around and finally turned the corner into the Tuscan Garden. In the garden, there was a man photographing the area and some plants. As we walked by him he stopped us and asked if he could take our picture for the paper. We said yes and took two pictures for him. As I turn around I see Thomas on his knee with a ring in his hand. I was in complete shock. It was such a beautiful moment. Of course, I said yes!
