Nicole and Wes

How We Met

Wes and I met 6 years ago while working at a local grocery store called West-Side Market. I worked at the courtesy desk, and he worked in the meat department! I remember the first time we saw each other, he came in to apply for a job, and after exchanging a few words, I immediately turned to a co-worker and said “he’s so cute!” He says now that when he first started working there, he too turned to a co-worker and said “I will make her my wife one day.” So, I guess you could say it was love at first sight! A few Facebook messages later (because that’s how it’s done nowadays, right?), and an exchange of phone numbers, and here we are today, engaged after 5 years of dating.

how they asked

Wes and I planned a very last minute trip to Martha’s Vineyard for the long 4th of July weekend. We realized that work would start to get super busy for the both of us, so we should probably plan a trip together ASAP before all the madness begins. We chose Martha’s Vineyard because Wes’s aunt and uncle live there, I had never been, and Wes hadn’t been since he was little. We contacted his uncle, and he was able to so kindly hook us up with a house for the weekend. We got very lucky, as this was three weeks before 4th of July. We drove up Sunday at 4 o’clock in the morning, and although we were both very sleepy, it was actually so lovely because we were able to see the sun rise and take in all of the beautiful scenery (and avoid all the traffic!). That day, his uncle and aunt drove us around Martha’s Vineyard and took us on our own little tour of the island, we were able to explore the beautiful beach in Chilmark, and even take a boat ride around the island.

The whole day was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. That night, we had plans to have dinner with his family, so we came back to the house to get ready. I was so tired and sunburned from the beach, that deep down I really just wanted to go to bed, but knew that I would be a party pooper if I did. So we popped open a bottle of champagne, and I got myself ready for the night. We didn’t have a car there, so his uncle came to pick us up, and when I came outside, he asked to take a picture of us in front of this old windmill that was right outside of our house. I was totally game, since everything we do requires us taking a picture together! As we started taking pictures, Wes suggested that we take a funny one, which I thought was weird, but of course did it anyways. Our forever “funny pose” is when we stand back to back, as if we are Charlie’s Angels.

I know, it’s really stupid, but that’s just what we do. So I started doing the pose, and little did I know, he was pulling a ring out of his pocket.

When I turned around, he was down on one knee saying that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.

I honestly can’t remember everything that he said because I was so surprised, and couldn’t believe that what I had been waiting for my whole life, was happening at that very moment.

Luckily, we have the whole proposal captured through about 60 photos, and every time I look at them, I cry tears of happiness.

A huge thank you to Wes’s uncle for catching such a special moment for us that we will cherish forever!
