How We Met
We are high school sweethearts! Travis and I both grew up in Thousand Oaks. We met in high school Spanish class 11 years ago. On the first day of school, we sat near each other, worked on assignments together, and shared mutual friends…needless to say, we quickly grew from classmates to best friends. I had an innocent crush on the cute boy but was always too scared to share how I truly felt.
At the end of Travis’ senior year, he grew up with the courage to ask me out on a date and show me how I truly deserved to be treated in a relationship. We went to the Santa Monica Pier on our first date, enjoyed some Mexican food, and played a bunch of carnival games. I came home that day with a teddy bear and a feeling I never felt before. I guess I’ve always been in love with my best friend and we were finally giving ourselves a fair shot at being happy.
Even though he was headed off to San Diego State University while I had one more year of high school, I knew this friendship and relationship we were building would be worth fighting for. From being in a long-distance relationship, feeling homesick, attending SDSU together, to finding comfort in each other during a pandemic; I knew we could handle anything that gets thrown our way. It’s definitely been a long journey but our constant support and love have allowed us to create a beautiful life in San Diego after college. These 9 years together have meant the world to me, each experience has helped our relationship grow stronger and has also given us opportunities to grow and mature as individuals. Life is truly better with your best friend and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.
How They Asked
Travis and I were planning a trip up the coast for our 9-year anniversary. I just wanted to enjoy the scenery in Big Sur and have a relaxing vacation together. We planned to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and watch the sunset on a cliffside for the anniversary. I didn’t think anything of it because we do sunset dates all the time. Also, he was doing a great job at making me believe it would happen in Napa Valley. You could say he tricked me!
We arrived at Soberanes Point and it was one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen. As we walked up the steps and onto the cliffside, I saw a cute little picnic set up. As I’m about to ask him if this setup was a surprise for our anniversary, he goes down on one knee immediately. I am in complete shock and trying to process everything. He spoke about all our moments leading up to this point, and the next thing I knew the man asked me to marry him!
My heart was so full and I was completely speechless, I could only say I love you a million times!! It genuinely was the most beautiful day, it felt like we were the only two people in this world at that very moment. Travis went above and beyond for me, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to spend the rest of my life with.
