Nicole and Ricky
How We Met: Oddly enough, Ricky and I were in the same 8th grade class and never knew it! Though we went to different high schools we crossed paths a few times through mutual friends, but never really spoke to one another. We got to know each other when we began working together at Islamorada Fish Co. in 2007.
Ricky and I became great friends, so much that we did not want to ruin our friendship by pursuing anything more. Then in December of 2008, Ricky pulled me aside at a Christmas party and expressed his true feelings to me. He didn’t want to wait any longer and possibly lose me to another guy. That night we decided to risk it all and begin writing our love story.
how they asked: Before I tell you how they asked, I have to give you a little background information…
After 6 months of dating, Ricky and I had our first fight. We were in Vegas with friends and Ricky thought that the best way to make things better and prove his love to me was to buy a $25 ring at the Excalibur gift shop and propose to me in the lobby of the Tropicana, in front of everyone. I was mortified! Ricky got down on one knee and refused to get up until I said yes. Our friends all took pictures and people passing by were yelling and clapping. I stood there laughing and thinking to myself “he is out of his mind”. Eventually he realized it was too soon and we were not ready to get married. However, Ricky wanted me to keep the ring as a symbol that he would someday replace it with a real one and “do it right”. I still have the ring and photos to this day. We frequently laugh and joke about that night.
Fast forward three years…
Ricky and his best friend, Alek, brought up the idea of a Vegas trip. We had all been talking about how we wanted to go this summer and I had the weekend off. It seemed like the perfect time for a last minute Vegas trip. So we texted our closest friends and planned it all out. Little did I know the idea of this trip was not random at all, but very well thought out and extremely sneaky. So we set plans to head out to Vegas girls in one car, guys in the other. We arrived to the hotel and headed to the room to get ready for dinner. The girls got ready in one room while the guys went to another to shower and get ready for the night. We all met up in the lobby to walk to dinner. Ricky said he wanted to try a place in the MGM, but that he wanted to go by the Tropicana on the way because he heard they have $5 blackjack. As we walked into the Tropicana, Ricky said to everyone, “Hey guys, remember that one time I proposed to Nicole here?” We all laughed and stood in the exact spot he proposed at 3 years before.
Ricky then took both of my hands, looked me in the eyes and asked, “Now what if I did it for real?” My heart dropped, my hands began to shake, and I stood there, in the middle of the Tropicana as the love of my life expressed his feelings and got down on one knee to ask me to be his wife.
Our friends stood around taking pictures and videotaping as Ricky pulled out a beautiful custom ring that he had made just for me. I was in shock and could not hold back the tears of joy that came running down my face. I have never seen a hand as shaky as Ricky’s when he held out that box and asked me the most important question of our lives. I was speechless and simply shook my head yes as Ricky put the ring on my finger. Our friends all cheered for us, as did the random people walking by.
We then headed to the MGM where Ricky had already made dinner reservations. We sat at the table with some of our closest friends. I was so happy and still in shock that Ricky had to order for me.
After dinner we went to the room that I thought was for the boys. It turned out Ricky had a very nice suite waiting for us. The room was decorated with congratulations banners, balloons, pictures, and my favorite champagne. We all toasted to us, celebrated, took pictures, and shared the excitement.
The next day our friends left and Ricky took me to stay at a suite at my favorite hotel, The Venetian. I had always wanted to stay there, it was so beautiful! We spent that night just the two of us. We went to dinner and a Cirque Du Soliel show (another thing I have always wanted to do).
It was the perfect weekend, with the perfect proposal from the perfect man for me. I could not have asked for more.
