How We Met
People always say that love comes when you’re least expecting it. This definitely happened to me when I met Mitchell. I had a boyfriend that was a rebound after a rough relationship. I was beginning a new job at Hot Topic for the holiday season right after I graduated high school. Mitchell was working the day that I had my orientation, and all the girls that I talked to were saying how cute he was. I wasn’t phased or interested, to be honest. I was in a relationship and wasn’t looking. He did his job while I was preparing to learn about mine. No big deal. We worked together for the first time on Black Friday of 2012. We both had the Midnight to 4 AM shift, which left me exhausted but exhilarated to be working my first shift at one of my favorite stores.
We were put in specific zones to focus on helping customers. But, halfway through the shift, I and he got to talking. I was interested in making friends, and he was really nice. So, we decided to count down the minutes until our shift was done, and then, we got coffee and tea together. We talked and talked, and soon, we had made plans to go to the movies together to see Wreck-It-Ralph. I had just seen it with my boyfriend at the time, but I loved the movie, so I said yes to going. We kept texting until the movie that following Sunday, and while I was there, I had a feeling that I never had felt before. I had butterflies for the first time. I knew he was something special. I had to figure out why. I broke up with my boyfriend that night, and I pursued a relationship with Mitchell. A little over six years later, we’re engaged and still crazy in love with each other.
How They Asked
This engagement was a long time coming for the two of us. Mitchell and I had been through everything within the six years we had been dating (at the time of the proposal). We had been through the highest of highs to the lowest of lows together. We traveled the country together, dealt with loss, made positive and negative memories that will last a lifetime. It was December 23rd, 2018 when Mitchell proposed. I knew I never wanted a Christmas proposal, so he made sure it was a special one. We were at the New York Jets versus the Green Bay Packers game at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Mitch had never seen his favorite football team play before, so I had gotten him tickets for his birthday / as an early anniversary gift. He was so excited, and I was too because football is my favorite sport. It’s something we’ve loved and bonded over over the years, so it was a perfect day for the two of us.
We were jokingly teasing each other over who was winning and who was losing. We went through the entire game without a care in the world. We were happy and having fun. We decided to leave during the fourth quarter so that we could avoid traffic on the way out of the stadium. On the way back to the car, I noticed he was slowing down behind me. I thought maybe he was texting or something.
But, all of a sudden, he started talking and saying all of this sweet stuff. I started to scream because I knew what was happening. All of a sudden, he pulled out a ring and went down on one knee, and I couldn’t do anything but tackle him to the ground. Appropriate for a football game proposal, right? I couldn’t stop saying yes, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him. He is my best friend. He has supported me through mental breakdowns and sky-high accomplishments. I would never want to spend my life with anyone but him.
