How We Met
Brian and I first met in middle school, but we became closer in high school. We found out that we lived just a block away from each other, so he would walk me home every day. On June 2, 2009, Brian rode his moped to my house and asked me to be his girlfriend. We enjoyed the summer, and the rest of high school together. Then came college. Brian got accepted to the University of South Florida, and I decided on Ramapo College of New Jersey. We had no doubts about going into college. We said we were going to try and make it work. Long-distance was not easy.
I am a firm believer in “what is meant to be, will be.” There were many ups and downs, but we made it through, and our love is stronger than ever. And now, 11 years later, we purchased our first home, and are looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together!
How They Asked
We’ve been dating for 11 years now, so obviously the question has come up. This summer, we purchased our first home, so I knew that the question could happen any day. I would call him out on it all the time. With every fancy dinner, every sunrise, every sunset, every trip to the beach I would say, “You’re going to ask me then, aren’t you.” I told him the only way he could catch me off guard is if he asks me first thing in the morning. He would always just laugh, and said I’ll never see it coming.
My birthday is August 30, and Brian said we were going to spend the weekend down the shore. I knew this was it. He was going to ask me this weekend. He said that he made us 2 dinner reservations; Friday night was a casual dinner and Saturday was “a little fancier.” So of course, I went to get my nails done and made sure to pack every piece of white clothing I own.
We are still in the process of moving all of our things into the new house, so my home office is still set up at my parents’ house. On Friday, Brian said once I’m all done packing and finished with work, to meet at our (new) house to switch cars, and take mine down the shore. At 1 PM he texted me and asked where I was because he was starving. So I’m thinking okay, we’ll meet at our house, go get lunch and then drive down the shore.
I’ve got a San Diego t-shirt on with my denim shorts, flip flops, and a bathing suit underneath. I unlock the front door, walk-in, and completely stop in my tracks. It took a while for me to process what was going on. One of my favorite songs, “Forever To Go” by Chase Rice was playing. There were rose petals all over the room, candles, champagne, a picture of us at our high school graduation, and a banner that read “Will You Marry Me.” And at the back of the room, was Brian. He was dressed so nicely, looking so handsome. I still could not process what was happening. (Brian posted my reaction on his Instagram, you should definitely go check it out)
He walked over to me, took my hands, and said such sweet and wonderful things. I’ve been waiting for this day for so long, and it was all finally happening! Walking into that room was a lot to process, but when he got down on one knee and I saw that ring, it (literally) took my breath away. I was speechless. It was definitely worth the wait!!
