how we met
Even though we grew up about 30 minutes apart in western Maryland, we didn’t meet until we were sophomores in college at UMD-College Park, both in the journalism school. We had many of the same friends and were involved in similar groups on campus. As luck would have it, we lived in the same apartment building in our senior year, which it made quite easy and natural to go from hanging out as friends to being together one-on-one. Watching “Friends” re-runs was our little excuse, and just like Chandler and Monica, we kept our relationship hidden from our friends at first – but soon, there was no denying it, and we didn’t want to anyway. Today, I’m very thankful for the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, Commons 6 and “I’ll Be There For You” for getting us together!
how they asked
For the past few years, I’ve had it in my mind that I wanted to propose to Lauren in Cape Town, South Africa, looking over the city and the ocean from high up on Table Mountain. We haven’t made it there yet (but are determined to make it part of our honeymoon trip!), so I decided to pop the question on a long weekend trip to Boston this past September. Lauren is a total bookworm, and for an earlier anniversary present, I had given her a photo book with many of our best shots from our trips we’ve taken together. I crafted another one featuring every photo I could find of the two of us – I knew that was the way to her heart, and it would make the proposal more creative! I sneakily packed the ring box and book in my luggage for Boston while she wasn’t looking, and kept it hidden for the duration of the trip until the second-to-last day. We were planning on walking from our AirBnB to a nearby cider house, and stopping at a picturesque waterfront park along the way – the place I had picked out months ago! I needed something to carry the book in without her noticing, so I clumsily used a drawstring bag and nearly gave myself away…
“What’s in the bag?”
“I mean…uh…it’s for carrying cider back here, in case we buy some, so we don’t have to lug it in our arms.”
She believed me somehow.
Once we got to the spot along Boston Harbor, the setting was perfect and the proposal went just right! Now if we go back to Boston, we’ll always have a special place to come back to and reminisce.
