Rachel and Nicholas
How We Met: It all started 10 years ago. My new husband was sitting in the very last row of our 8th grade science class. It was the first day of school. I remember like it was yesterday. I walked into the classroom and my eyes went directly to him. We made eye contact for a split second and then he turned away. I sat 3 chairs away from him and to this day I’ll never know what our teacher was talking about. All I knew was I needed to introduce myself to the guy sitting near me.
We didn’t talk that first day of class, but the very next day, I walked in the room and again we locked eyes. This time, he couldn’t take his eyes off me. It was love at “second” sight. He wrote me a note telling me that he loved the way my eyes sparkled, the way I wore my hair, and that his name was Nick. From that point on, we were inseparable. He walked me to each class everyday, holding my hand, and kissing my cheek.
It was Winter before we knew it and the annual Snowball Dance was quickly approaching. He wrote me a note asking if I would go with him. Of course I responded with a “yes!” Our first date. Nick kissed me for the first time on the lips in the middle of the dance floor in our school’s cafeteria. Time stood still. Almost 7 years later to the day of our very first “date” Nick would ask me to be his wife!
how they asked: It was November at the time, exactly one month before Nick would propose. He asked if I wanted to get away for the weekend to snowboard. Given that we share a love for the sport, I jumped at the opportunity to have a weekend away with my boyfriend! Nick taught me how to snowboard here when we were Freshman in high school. It was always “our spot” to be. The day came and we packed up and left for the weekend.
We made it to the mountains where I was slowly taking my time putting my gear on, while Nick sat on the back of his car waiting for me and tapping his foot on the ground. I asked why he was in such a rush but he just said he couldn’t wait to get to the top. We purchased lift tickets and then made our way to the top of the only run that was open. When we got there, the scenery seemed more beautiful than normal. The sky was an incredible light grey color, the way it looks right before it snows. The sun was trying to peak through the snow filled clouds.
We strapped our feet into our boards and began making our way down the mountain. For some reason, I couldn’t find my balance and kept falling. Given the great guy Nick is, he would stop for me every time until I got back on my feet. The final time I fell, he didn’t stop. He kept boarding and by the time I caught up with him, he was on the ground. I thought he had fallen! I rushed as fast as I could to him only to just about knock him over, off his knee!
Woops! When I was able to control myself, I looked at him. There he was, the man of my dreams on one knee proposing to me. I didn’t even cry. I was beyond excited this moment was happening. I dreamed of this day my whole life. The moment I said “YES,” the skies opened up and it began to snow.
