How We Met
Shakeel and I met over 10 years ago in high school in Brooklyn, New York. We later attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. together where we remained close friends. Our chemistry was insane and a couple of years into our college career Shakeel asked me to be his girlfriend. Dating him was fun… we grew together as friends, we grew our love for each other, our respect for each other and admiration. Most importantly we encouraged our individual growth as well.
How They Asked
Five years into dating, on December 31, 2018, Shakeel took me to dinner in Manhattan and then we went back over the bridge to Dumbo House attending a New Year’s Eve party with friends. 20 minutes before the ball dropped Shakeel mentioned that my friend had been looking for me. After searching the entire party, I found her. She directed me to entertainment on the rooftop. I took the elevator upstairs and when I stepped outside of the doors to my far left were candles. I walked to the tent (it was raining) where the candles and flowers were set up. It was facing the Brooklyn Bridge and the beautiful view of Manhattan. Shakeel gave me a heartfelt speech for about 3 minutes before he got down on one knee. Of course I said yes! Literally as soon as he proposed we caught the last 5 seconds of the countdown into the New Year. To top everything off there were fireworks.
This proposal was so special because after college Shakeel and I stayed in Washington, D.C. His proposal by the Brooklyn Bridge took us back to where everything started. I am so in love with this man and excited I get to call my best friend my fiancé. 2019 has already been magical!
