How they met: On November 3rd, 2012, ING New York City Marathon got cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy. If the marathon had not been cancelled AB and his twin brother Hattan would have had a very low key day walking around the city, spending time with their family and friends, and going to bed early so they could be their best on race day. Since the race was cancelled, the two twin brothers decided to enjoy the city. They visited their favorite Saturday afternoon brunch spot, Day & Night and while they were there, Hattan met Honey’s close friend who invited Hattan to meet up with her and her friends at a wine bar on the Upper East Side the next day. The following day, Hattan met up with her and her friend Honey. Hattan hit it off with everyone and the next day Hattan told AB that he met the perfect girl for him. He said she was kind, genuine and beautiful.
AB went back to Saudi, and could not stop thinking about this amazing girl Hattan told him about. Figuring he had nothing to lose, he asked Hattan if he can ask the girl he met for Honey’s phone number? He sent Honey the first text message introducing himself and that’s when the magic happened. For the first three-month they texted, e-mailed, Skyped and FaceTimed, but they had yet to meet each other in person. On February 14th, 2013 on Valentines Day, they met in person when Honey came to pick him up from JFK airport. The rest is history.
how they asked: When AB proposed to Honey, he wanted everything to be perfect. He had a vision of how he wanted it in his head. He wanted an amazing view of the city that would allow them to have a full view of the sunset. He also wanted to incorporate Honey’s favorite Cherry Blossom trees. And last but not least, he wanted to have their whole entire family and group of friends there under the pretense that it was Honey’s surprise birthday.
Here is how it all happened:
Before the proposal day, AB sent an invitation to 50+ of their closest friends and family members. On the invitation he asked them to promptly arrive to The Glass Houses for a surprise birthday. They never knew of his plan to propose that day and they all arrived and waited for them on the 14th floor.
He told Honey that he was going to take her out to a nice dinner for her birthday and they arrived at The Glass Houses and proceeded to the 21st floor. Honey couldn’t believe her eyes when she stepped off the elevator. Her name was spelled out in rose petals and there were 4 Cherry Blossom trees with crystals hanging off the branches and photos of them at the end. A harpist played the song “At Last.” AB walked her down a path of rose petals to the end of the aisle where there was a Haft-Seen table, a Persian tradition, and a big penguin ice sculpture.
AB wanted a penguin sculpture because they are mates for life. In between the kissing penguins was a pebble that said “Will You Marry Me?” AB proposed and Honey said yes.
After the proposal, AB and Honey took some photos and then AB told her he had another surprise for her. They went down to the 14th floor and she was shocked to see all of her family and friends there. They were surprised to learn he had just proposed! After some hugs and happy tears, the group went back up to the 21st floor where they enjoyed cocktail hour, a seated dinner, a surprise birthday cake, and dancing.
