How We Met
We met in middle school while he was dating my friend at the time. We went to different high schools because I moved. After we graduated in 2010, I decided to get back in touch with him and see how he was doing. I always thought he was a nice guy and just wanted to hang out. I knew I could now that he wasn’t dating anyone. That summer we began to hang out all the time, going to movies, kayaking, going to the beach, grabbing food, or just hanging out at my house. Neither one of us wanted a relationship at the time so our friendship grew stronger and stronger. I began to get feelings for him and told him but we remained friends. He then enlisted in the Navy in 2013. Before he left for boot camp, I made sure we hung out one more time. Before he left my house I grabbed his face and kissed him. He was in shock, I mean we had kissed before but I caught him off guard. I didn’t think I would see him again after that, I told myself I needed to let him go and find someone else. He surprised me one day when I received a call from an out of state number. I picked up the phone, and it was him. I couldn’t stop crying. One of the first things he asked was if I was seeing anyone. When I said no, he began to pour his feelings to me and apologized for realizing so late. I told him it was perfect timing. The past few days before, I couldn’t get him out of my head and wasn’t myself. We then began to write letters for the rest of the time he was in boot camp, since calls were very limited. After he finished, we met up in Jacksonville where he asked me to be his girlfriend. He was then stationed in Washington state. We have been making sure to do anything we can to make this long distance relationship work, whether it is me visiting him, or vice versa.
how they asked
We planned a trip for me to visit him in Washington and to also have a road trip to Oregon while I was there. We got back from Oregon and relaxed. I reminded him that he needed to take me to “the place above the clouds”. He said “of course I’ll be taking you there, so you can take all the photos you want”. He had discovered Mount Walker lookout point one day and face timed me to show me how beautiful it was. You could see the clouds and the mountains sticking up from the top of them. It was amazing seeing it through face time, so I told him he had to take me there on my next trip to Washington. We finally got to the top and he took me to one part of the lookout point where we were freezing our butts off. But I was happily taking photos of the gorgeous view. Once I was too cold to take anymore, I asked him if we could go to the other view point and see if it was warmer. We then drove to the other side. I happily got out and started taking photos as we were walking to the lookout point. It was breathtaking. You could see everything below, the mountains, the gorgeous trees, everything. I began snapping away while he began to hug me from behind. He then said “I don’t know why my hearts beating so fast” I just ignored it and said, “I have no idea” I was too focused on taking photos. He then began to whisper in my ear saying “there are many reasons why I had to bring you here and I think you know one of the reasons why, I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side.” He then turned me around, grabbed my left hand, kissed where I had the flower ring he gave me and he said “I don’t think you’ll need this one anymore.” He pulled out this small white box and I Immediately hugged him from the excitement before he could ask the question. Then he said “Nathalie, will you marry me?” i hugged him again, not being able to say anything and he said ” is that a yes?” I nodded and said “of course!” He then called over to his friend, who I thought had just been a tourist, taking photos of the whole thing.
