How We Met

The year was 2010 in August. I was a young high school graduate starting my first college semester at Salisbury University. There was nothing but hope ahead for me. Evan was a sophomore when we first met during the first Honors meeting of the year. He was on a couch laughing at the President of the HSA (Honors Student Association)’s jokes. We saw each other and I adored his laugh. I found him to be a handsome young man with a wonderful smile. Meeting after meeting, we got to know each other. When the HSA proposed a European potluck dinner, Evan knew how to get closer to me. He knew that I was born in Russia, so he asked if I wanted to make a Russian dish with him. I was absolutely enamored with the idea and him. As we prepared the potatoes, the onions, and the ground beef, there was a moment when we were in his kitchen. I looked up at him and he looked at me. We both wanted to share a kiss, but alas, we did not. However, our friendship only kept blooming. In the Summer of 2011, we had been texting throughout the months away. He invited me to the Howard County Fair and I kept thinking how life with him would be exciting. As soon as school started again in the Fall, we decided to take a chance and go on a bowling date.

how they asked

On July 10th, 2015, I worked a long day at the Brookside Gardens Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. Evan asked me if I wanted to go on a walk with him. It was an offer I could not refuse because I love going on walks with him. As we walked around the neighborhood, we talked about our day and I wanted to go to Chipotle for dinner. As we turned a corner, he started to ask whether or not the plants around us were poison ivy. Now, I had educated him many times on the plant, so after the third time, as we entered the park, he asked me one more time, “is this poison ivy”? I was about to walk away, but I was curious to know what silly plant he was pointing at. As I turned to face him, he was on one knee with a box and inside that box was not poison ivy, but a beautiful ring. I asked in surprise, “Really?!?!” and he happily answered, “Will you marry me?” I, of course, said sure and a big YES, and then he informed me that we had a dinner reservation at our favorite sushi restaurant. I panicked because I needed to take a shower and get ready for dinner. And so I did and we had a lovely dinner. Now, we are married and we are looking forward to more adventures in the future.
