Natalie and Rob
How We Met
Rob and I met on a video chat website 5 years ago, completely by chance (some would call it fate). He lives in England and I live in Florida. We added each other on Facebook just for fun, but didn’t talk for months. One day he reached out via Facebook message and it didn’t take long before I was smitten. We got to know each other by Skyping and messaging for about six months, and although we hadn’t said it out loud, I knew he was the one for me. We met in person June 2, 2013 shortly after my 18th birthday. I’ll never forget that “I might throw up, pass out, and pee my pants all at the same time” feeling as I watched him walk toward me for the first time in the airport. Our first kiss was on the beach of my hometown at sunrise. It was drizzling and not very sunny, until we saw some dolphins swim by. He kissed me, the rain stopped, and the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. A few days later he told me he loved me on top of a lighthouse despite his fear of heights. We’ve seen each other twice a year, for four years and are looking forward to the day when we no longer have to leave an airport alone.
how they asked
I went to see him in the UK this past Christmas, having just celebrated our four year anniversary. The first time I went to the UK, Rob took me to a place called Castle Howard. Walking the halls and grounds of the castle, you can’t help but feel royal. Every time I go to England I insist on visiting Castle Howard. We hadn’t planned a day to go yet, but this particular day Rob planned to take me to an art gallery. It was the first sunny day since I had arrived. Having had a beautiful day out, we decided it was time to go home. On the way home, we were passing by Castle Howard when he started driving toward the entrance… I quickly realized he had been planning to take me there all along!
We walked around the grounds, and came to my favorite part of the estate called The Temple of the Four Winds. It looks like it came right out of my favorite movie, Pride & Prejudice- an absolute dream. As I took photos of the temple, Rob set up his camera and told me to come pose for a photo in front of the building (he was actually filming). He turned to me and said, “You should take off your gloves” with a laugh. Up until this point, I was trying not to get my hopes up.
He got down onto one knee and asked me to marry him as he presented the most beautiful antique sapphire ring. I always hoped he would propose to me like that. Four years of Skype dates and teary goodbyes in the airport were so worth it.
