How We Met

Matthew and I are huge music lovers. So much so that we actually met outside of a club called Fur where we had seen a Swedish DJ in Washington, DC (we like to joke that we truly did find love in a hopeless place). As soon as we locked eyes we both had a sense of having known each other a long time although we had never met before. We ended up running into each other in New York city on Randall’s Island at Electric Zoo not even a week later and spent a few days dancing together and falling for each other pretty hard. A week after Electric Zoo, our buses pulled up next to each other at Merriweather Pavilion in Maryland for a free music festival and as soon as I saw him, I knew something special was happening. We spent the entire day together and we both fell so in love on that day. A week later my dad, who recently passed away, and I were taking a walk and I told him about Matthew. He told me to go on a “proper date” with him and so I did. From that date forward we have been an “us” and I knew he was my guy.

how they asked

Matthew and I have lived in four cities together and it was during our fourth time house hunting in a new city that he took me completely by surprise. We spent two nights at an adorable bed and breakfast in Philadelphia, the city we now call home, in an 1850’s four-story townhouses located only three blocks from Rittenhouse Square in the heart of historic Center City. On the morning he proposed we dined on a delicious breakfast in the main house of the bed and breakfast and wandered around Chestnut Hill, our potential new neighborhood. Matthew insisted we make our way back to the city to look at “one last property.” We walked to Independence Hall and most unexpectedly, he bent down on one knee and asked me to to marry him. He said, “This is where America started and this is where I want to start my married life with you.” I was so excited I didn’t even ask to see the ring! It was such a special moment, made even more special by the fact that his brother, sister-in-law and our baby nephews were there taking pictures. To add to the perfection, my fiancé designed my ring himself and I have never seen anything more beautiful or more “me” in my life and as a style blogger, I’m a tough gal to please sartorially!

Afterward he told me that we were staying at the Ritz Carlton in Center City where we were greeted with endless amounts of champagne and a rose petal covered bed (always wanted one of those!). I immediately got a manicure (I had chipped nails!), and then primped before meeting some very close friends at the downstairs bar to celebrate our new status as an engaged couple! Afterward, my fiancé took me out to Talula’s Garden where we enjoyed more champagne on the house and a ten course tasting menu containing fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. The following morning we enjoyed a brunch buffet at the Ritz with my fiancé’s best friend with plenty more champagne. This year has been one of major ups and downs, with the best moment of my life when Matthew proposed in January and the worst when my dad passed away this October. I can’t imagine going through life without Matthew by my side through the best and worst times and I can’t wait for our June wedding on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland! Follow along with our wedding planning on my style blog, Belles Vies.
