How We Met
I met Nick Jones when I was 14 years old, the first day of high school in Grade 9. He sat behind me in math class and we quickly became friends. Our friendship grew as each year passed and people began to assume we were dating, but we were “just friends” and that was the truth (for a while!). He had asked me out a couple of times but I loved that he was my best friend and didn’t want to jeopardize our friendship, especially since we were going to University in a few short months
. But Nick knew that our friendship was different than most and he never gave up on the idea of becoming my boyfriend. In November 2011, I finally agreed to be his girlfriend, and it was the best decision I made. Our relationship blossomed and I never imagined I would feel so comfortable around someone to really just be myself. We went to the Prom together and everyone joked that we looked like we were getting married because I wore a white dress (this is real-life foreshadowing folks!) Let’s flash forward 5 years…
how they asked
One Saturday in March I THOUGHT I was going to a fundraiser Gala that my friend’s mom had won tickets to and could not attend. She had “won” a raffle at a previous fundraiser that included a Add to dictionary spa day, a room at Caesar’s Windsor and the Gala tickets. Or so that was the cover story! I was so excited because I love free stuff (haha). My friend and I got our nails done, went out for lunch, and went to the Casino to get ready. My friend kept her cool all day and didn’t give up any hints or signs of secret-keeping (which is HUGE for us because we’re a couple of chatty Cathy’s when we’re together!) and when it was time to go to the Caboto Club for the “gala” she told me that …her dad “showed her a back-alley shortcut” to get there…
As she navigated the wrong way I pulled out my Google maps because I am also direction-ally challenged and I knew that we were going to be late. She pulled into a dark alley parking lot and was like “we’re here, you have to get out”. All I saw was a (mostly) empty parking lot and a warehouse with nobody in sight. Let me tell you I was NOT getting out, alone, in a dark alley, and it took her a few minutes to convince me that I had nothing to worry about. I walked up to a dark metal door, took a deep breath and opened it… The room was dimly lit with candles and rose petals leading to a path. And right then I KNEW. I found a card telling me to walk to the glowing heart (that I bought Nick YEARS ago for one of our dating anniversaries) and then a video being projected on the wall started.
It was Nick telling me our story and speaking to me, making me feel like I was the only girl in the world… it was beautiful. When it finished he came out of the dark and asked me to marry him. I said YES!!! Just when I thought this night couldn’t get any better, he said “Are you ready to tell everyone?” Our family and friends poured out of the back room! Nick planned it allllll out!
