Naomi and Yosef
How We Met
A mutual friend set us up, but for all intents and purposes it was a blind date. I insisted on having my own transportation and meeting him instead of being picked up. Yosef sent me the address of the bar and told me he would meet me there at 8:00 p.m. I followed my GPS and pulled up to what looked like an abandoned building in an abandoned area. My first reaction was…”Is this some sort of joke?” I sent him a message to let him know that I was a bit early and wanted to make sure I was at the right place. He said that I was at the correct place and that he was running a bit late. He texted me three more times, in twenty minute intervals between them, apologizing that his appointment was running even later, and it wouldn’t be till after 9:00 p.m. that he would be ready. This whole time I was sitting in my car outside of an abandoned building!
After the last text, it hit me, he must be buying a car. It made sense from what we had chatted about before on the phone, and his appointment was in an area that ONLY has car dealerships. So I asked, “Are you buying a car on our FIRST date?”
He was floored. He couldn’t believe that I had figured it out. He was buying a car and told me that he was promised to be out of the dealership an hour ago. So I thought about it for a quick minute and decided that I pretty much have two options: 1) LEAVE or 2) meet him at the dealership. I went with option 2! I pulled up to the dealership and Yosef met me outside for the first time. We walked in together, and he proceeded to open the driver’s door to the most expensive vehicle in the showcase (no, that’s not the one he bought). We sat in the car and had our first conversation. After another hour or so, the financial representative came out to get him for the paperwork. I insisted on waiting in the lobby, but the financial rep (not knowing it was our first date) would not have it. Yosef also encouraged me to join him in the Rep’s office, and so I did. (Interesting side note: I found out his entire background check on our first date!…car payments, insurance payments, credit score, etc…). By the time the paperwork was done and we walked out of the dealership it was 11:00 p.m., and I pointed out that he was 3 HOURS LATE FOR OUR FIRST DATE. He apologized and asked me if I wanted to go back to the bar, or as I called it the abandoned building. I said yes and went to my first Speakeasy. It was a really cool place and we still go back there.
how they asked
Almost a year and a half later of dating, Yosef and I planned a trip to Cancun for my birthday. On the fourth day we were there, he took me on a ferry ride to a small island across the water called Isla Mujeres. He wouldn’t give me any details, just that we were going to walk around a beautiful island and take photos. He was dressed in a nice button down and shorts, so I got suspicious and wore a dress, just in case. We strolled along the beach and toured the town. Yosef seemed to take his time strolling alongside the beach and town. A while later, he got us a taxi and asked to be taken to the lighthouse by the edge of the island. I thought to myself….how did he know there was a lighthouse there, and what were we doing for the last two hours?!?! When we got there, we sat by a restaurant overlooking the cliff of the island. It was beautiful. The water surrounded us and the sun was shining brightly. We ordered beers and took our time watching the beautiful waves and scenery. Right past the lighthouse there is a sculpture garden, so we finished our drinks and walked around taking lots of photos (as promised). When we got to the edge of the cliff, I saw a woman taking pictures of the waves with her iPad, and I asked her if she could take a photo of Yosef and me with my phone. It was simply too beautiful of a place and a selfie would not suffice. She was very sweet and took our picture. Yosef then walked me down a few stairs to a private area on the cliff. It was perfect. I was looking at the water and all of a sudden I didn’t see him in my peripheral vision anymore. So I started breathing heavily and thought to myself, IS HE ON HIS FREAKING KNEE?!?!!?…..I took a few moments to catch my breath and then slowly turned around to what was the most perfect moment of my life. Yosef was indeed on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I SAID YES! Yosef told me to look up and that same women who I had asked to take a photo of us just moments earlier was OUR PHOTOGRAPHER! I had no idea, and she captured the entire proposal. Yosef and I then had a photoshoot on the cliff (Punta Sur) and then taxied over to the beach for more photos. The Mexican taxi driver was the first one to wish us congratulations! It was the most perfect and romantic engagement. Our engagement spot was private and absolutely breath-taking.
I’m really happy I decided to go to the dealership that night!
